Recently, the museum placed a work by the Italian artist Nicola Bolla on display in the galleries. Bolla\u2019s work relies on the Duchampian idea of finding art in everyday objects, elevating the mundane into the spectacular. Bolla created this sculpture from polished, machine-cut glass, shaping it into the form of a chair. The work was also completely coated in hundreds of Swarovski crystals, a technique the artist has applied to other objects, including <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/d7hftxdivxxvm.cloudfront.net\/?height=542&amp;quality=80&amp;resize_to=fit&amp;src=https%3A%2F%2Fd32dm0rphc51dk.cloudfront.net%2FPudVnLCmRIcY-zcBJ2On1g%2Flarger.jpg&amp;width=445\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">skulls<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> and <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/d7hftxdivxxvm.cloudfront.net\/?height=800&amp;quality=50&amp;resize_to=fit&amp;src=https%3A%2F%2Fd32dm0rphc51dk.cloudfront.net%2F4R67-e3AfK0VmlbX7ejHDQ%2Fnormalized.jpg&amp;width=606\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">toilets<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. However, the sculpture at the Palazzo Maffei is a tribute to an artistic influence. The chair\u2019s design is based on <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.new-walls.com\/media\/5d\/ea\/08\/1687636574\/6f079204797b53e57870e194bfa3ad59.jpg?ts=1687636574\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">an 1888 painting by the post-Impressionist master Vincent van Gogh<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, now held by the National Gallery in London. I don\u2019t think many people would consider sitting on a chair made of glass, but that didn\u2019t stop a visiting couple back in April.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Though the incident occurred a few months ago, the Palazzo Maffei only released the CCTV footage last Thursday. The security camera video shows a pair of museum visitors in the gallery taking turns photographing each other. One after the other, they bent down slightly to hover over the chair, perhaps pretending they were about to sit down. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">One of them<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, however, seemed to think<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> that this museum piece <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">made of glass<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> could support their weight.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> They sat down on the chair\u2019s edge, <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/app\/news-upload\/2025\/06\/van-gogh-chair-palazzo-maffei-1024x729.jpeg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">causing the front legs to buckle<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. The visitor stumbled backward into the wall, assessed the damage for a few seconds, and then hastily left the gallery. According to staff, the duo left the museum immediately without informing anyone of what had happened. The Palazzo Maffei quickly notified the authorities, but they have yet to identify the two individuals caught on tape.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DKzCmSgolXJ\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&amp;igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA%3D%3D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In a post on Instagram<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, the Palazzo Maffei announced that <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the chair had been restored<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> and put back on display in the galleries. The museum also released a statement calling the incident an opportunity for them to educate the public about \u201cthe fragility of art and the need to take care of it.\u201d You\u2019d think that when visiting a museum or a gallery, refraining from touching the art is just one of those unspoken rules that everyone understands. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">But just like how a restaurant bathroom has <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">an <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">employees<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> must wash hands<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> sign, telling people they can\u2019t touch anything in a museum is just one more thing we do for that one person in every hundred who <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">just<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> can\u2019t help themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A museum visitor has sat on and broken a one-of-a-kind crystal-coated chair based on a painting by Vincent van Gogh.
