The sleeping Cupid,\u00a0a\u00a0subject\u00a0popular since antiquity,\u00a0typically represents\u00a0dormant love. Since the Renaissance, it has been most famously depicted as a subject in <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/4\/49\/Caravaggio_sleeping_cupid.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">a 1608 painting by Caravaggio<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, as well as in a now-lost 1496 sculpture by Michelangelo. While\u00a0the Caravaggio painting shows the cherubic figure lying asleep in complete darkness,\u00a0Perrault\u2019s depiction is notably brighter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Le r\u00e9veil de l\u2019Amour<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, Cupid faintly starts to open his eyes towards the viewer. He raises his left arm and arches his back, stretching out his body and shaking off his slumber. One contemporary description remarks how Perrault seemed to have captured \u201cthe idea of childhood\u2019s innocent loveliness\u201d. He lies against a layer of sheer cloth in what seems like a forest clearing. He is surrounded by roses, with a chorus of birds perched on a branch to bear witness to the love god waking up. Perrault places the cherub in this environment, possibly as a way of conveying to the viewer that love is part of nature itself. It\u2019s a base impulse that many people experience, revel in, and struggle with. The work is sensual and almost decadent, which is appropriate for Perrault\u2019s clientele. Many of his collectors were wealthy bourgeois or aristocrats seeking out well-executed academic-style paintings to serve as decorative art, similar to the Rococo paintings from over a century prior.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Le r\u00e9veil de l\u2019Amour<\/span><\/em> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">was exhibited<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> at two of the great cultural events of the early 1890s. First was the 1891 Salon, which also included <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Shepherd\u2019s Friends<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> by Daniel Ridgway Knight, <\/span><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.meisterdrucke.us\/kunstwerke\/1260px\/Jean_Leon_Gerome_-_Lion_on_the_Watch_-_%28MeisterDrucke-834886%29.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Lion on Watch<\/span><\/a><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> by Jean-L\u00e9on G\u00e9r\u00f4me, and <\/span><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/8\/8c\/Jules-Alexis_Muenier_-_La_Le%C3%A7on_de_cat%C3%A9chisme.jpg\/1200px-Jules-Alexis_Muenier_-_La_Le%C3%A7on_de_cat%C3%A9chisme.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Catechism<\/span><\/a><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> by Jules-Alexis Muenier (which was purchased by the French state). After the Salon, the Boston-based Doliber-Goodale Company purchased the painting to display it at their stall at the World Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. Since the Doliber-Goodale Company manufactured Mellin\u2019s Food, an early form of baby food, the work\u2019s subject seemed appropriate. Doliber-Goodale used the work\u2019s image on packaging materials and <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/ids.si.edu\/ids\/deliveryService?id=NMAH-AHB2020q016912&amp;max=600\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">even ordered lithographs of the painting as advertising<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> made Perrault\u2019s <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Le r\u00e9veil de l\u2019Amour<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> one of the most recognized marketing images in the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The French academic painter L\u00e9on-Jean-Bazille Perrault\u2019s work Le r\u00e9veil de l\u2019Amour, or The Awakening of Love, is an example of the artist\u2019s fixation on classical mythology.
