Giotto is more well-known for helping reintroduce realism in perspective and proportion to European painting. However, his teacher Cimabue created work that shows a transitory phase between Giotto\u2019s naturalism and the older Byzantine style of painting that had been popular among European artists for several centuries. The exhibition at the Louvre <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Revoir Cimabue<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> takes a closer look at the thirteenth-century master\u2019s work and his contributions to later developments in Italian Renaissance painting. The Louvre decided to curate an exhibition focusing on Cimabue because of their recent restoration of the 1280 painting <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Maest\u00e0<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, which has been in the Louvre collection since 1813. The painting shows a Madonna and Child enthroned surrounded by angels. It is an earlier work from the artist\u2019s career, especially compared to his later painting of a similar subject known as the <\/span><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/b\/be\/Cimabue_Trinita_Madonna.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Santa Trinita Maest\u00e1<\/span><\/a><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, showing a greater sense of depth, perspective, and realism. The differences in the Madonna\u2018s clothing are probably the best examples, as they seem tight and rigid in the Louvre Maest\u00e0, while the Santa Trinita Maest\u00e0 is looser, flowing, and more naturalistic. Louvre curators call the Maest\u00e0 \u201cthe founding act of Western painting<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201d.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> The recent restoration has made the nuances in color easier to perceive and shows influence from both Byzantine and Islamic art. Another Cimabue work in the Louvre collection that recently had its restoration completed was <\/span><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/5\/5d\/La_D%C3%A9rision_du_Christ_-_Cimabue_-_Mus%C3%A9e_du_Louvre_Peintures_RFML.PE.2023.33.1_-_apr%C3%A8s_restauration.jpg\/800px-La_D%C3%A9rision_du_Christ_-_Cimabue_-_Mus%C3%A9e_du_Louvre_Peintures_RFML.PE.2023.33.1_-_apr%C3%A8s_restauration.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Mocking of Christ<\/span><\/a><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. The work is one of eight segments in a diptych Cimabue created in the 1280s. Only three have been recovered, with <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Mocking of Christ<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> rediscovered in 2019 <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-50901497\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">in the kitchen of an elderly woman in northern France<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. After its rediscovery, it sold at auction for \u20ac24 million w\/p before being acquired by the Louvre in 2023.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Cimabue exhibition is scheduled<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> to close on May 12th. However, last Saturday, May 3rd, hailstorms in Paris damaged the Louvre roof enough to allow water to drip into the galleries. Some water drops came near several works, including Cimabue\u2019s <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Maest\u00e0<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> as well as <\/span><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/7\/77\/Duccio_franciscan-madonna-421.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Madonna of the Franciscans<\/span><\/a><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> by Cimabue\u2019s student Duccio di Buoninsegna. While the Duccio work is rather small and protected by a glass case, the <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Maest\u00e0<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> is incredibly large, measuring close to 14 feet tall. It was displayed <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/cdn.sanity.io\/images\/cxgd3urn\/production\/ee3ee2308334e1a901524f9582e7f3cc46f45207-2000x2650.jpg?w=1920&amp;h=2544&amp;q=85&amp;fit=crop&amp;auto=format\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">in the middle of one of the galleries on its own, mounted on a pedestal<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. The panel and the frame are made of wood, so they are very susceptible to water damage. Some water fell onto the stone base of Nicola Pisano\u2019s sculpture, <\/span><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/collections.mfa.org\/internal\/media\/dispatcher\/799716\/preview;jsessionid=980287A9B51CDDBC4B51162FF1316409\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Three Acolytes<\/span><\/a><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. An image of Louvre staff protecting the work by <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/cdn.sanity.io\/images\/cxgd3urn\/production\/443f017c0c03dafda7cc7d62314fd7957d0a2df6-2000x2800.jpg?w=1200&amp;h=1680&amp;q=85&amp;fit=crop&amp;auto=format\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">holding a sheet over the sculpture<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> began circulating online shortly after the incident. The exhibition closed after half an hour of dripping, with the Louvre bringing in firefighters to inspect the roof. They determined that a piece of hail had damaged a seal in a section of the glass roof.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This latest incident underscores the urgent need for extensive renovations at the Louvre. A <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/2023\/01\/the-louvres-limit-on-visitors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">visitor cap in 2023<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> has tried to relieve some of the stress placed on museum staff and the structure itself. French President Emmanuel Macron announced earlier this year that <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/2025\/02\/coming-soon-a-brand-new-louvre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the Louvre must be renovated<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> to handle the millions of visitors it receives yearly.
