Da Vinci\u2019s <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Last Supper<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, the Pinacoteca di Brera, and the Palazzo Reale may be more popular venues. The Museo del Novecento, however, occupies a central location in the city, just off the Piazza del Duomo. It\u2019s also a rather new museum, first opening in 2010. While twentieth-century art is the main focus, it specializes in modern Italian art, particularly the early twentieth-century Futurists. Starting last week, the museum has been operating a new exhibition dedicated not to a European artist but to an incredibly influential American artist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">With the help of the Milan municipality\u2019s cultural directorate and the organization Arte Totale, the museum opened the exhibition <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Rauschenberg and the Twentieth Century<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> on April 5th to pay homage to the artist on the year of his hundredth birthday. The show <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">is mainly organized<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> by <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">miart<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, the Milan International Modern and Contemporary Art Fair. The exhibition is part of their twenty-ninth edition, which <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">is dedicated<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> to Rauschenberg and what the organizers call his \u201cinsatiable curiosity and a deep commitment to collaboration and exchange of ideas\u201d. Robert Rauschenberg made use of several different styles and trends throughout his career. He is often associated with twentieth-century abstract expressionism, but he also made a name for himself through other styles like neo-Dada and pop art. He is usually considered a predecessor of postmodern and contemporary art. His use of everyday objects and images from popular culture echoes the work of <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/smarthistory.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/bicycle-wheel-and-fountain.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Marcel Duchamp<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> while heralding the advent of <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/app\/news-upload\/2019\/12\/maurizio-cattelan-banana.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Maurizio Cattelan<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. And in a way, that is the essence of the exhibition. The museum <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">is attempting<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> to look at how Rauschenberg and his work are part of a dialogue between earlier European artists while also connecting them to later artistic impulses.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Museo del Novecento presents several major works by Rauschenberg alongside works from the museum\u2019s collection. The Futurists pieces that offer commentary on modernity are placed alongside Rauschenberg works, like <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/artlogic-res.cloudinary.com\/w_1400,h_1400,c_limit,f_auto,fl_lossy,q_auto:good\/ws-ropac\/usr\/images\/feature_panels\/image\/7674\/rr_1279_300dpi.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">his <\/span><\/a><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/artlogic-res.cloudinary.com\/w_1400,h_1400,c_limit,f_auto,fl_lossy,q_auto:good\/ws-ropac\/usr\/images\/feature_panels\/image\/7674\/rr_1279_300dpi.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Gluts<\/span><\/a><\/em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/artlogic-res.cloudinary.com\/w_1400,h_1400,c_limit,f_auto,fl_lossy,q_auto:good\/ws-ropac\/usr\/images\/feature_panels\/image\/7674\/rr_1279_300dpi.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> series<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, which uses salvaged scrap metal from cars and old signs from gas stations. <\/span><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/cdn.finestresullarte.info\/rivista\/immagini\/2025\/fn\/rauschenberg-able-was-i-ere-i-saw-elba.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Able Was I Ere I Saw Elba<\/span><\/a><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> is part of the artist\u2019s series reinterpreting popular Western paintings on large ceramic panels. This one uses Jacques-Louis David\u2019s <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Napoleon Crossing the Alps<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> as its focus. The museum has decided to place it in the gallery alongside Arturo Martini\u2019s sculpture <\/span><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/2\/29\/Arturo_Martini%2C_I_morti_di_Bligny_trasalirebbero_%281935%29_Museo_del_Novecento_di_Milano.jpg\/2560px-Arturo_Martini%2C_I_morti_di_Bligny_trasalirebbero_%281935%29_Museo_del_Novecento_di_Milano.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">I morti di Bligny trasalirebbero<\/span><\/a><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, the title of which comes from a speech Mussolini gave commenting on the strained relationship between Italy and France. Later on, museum visitors see some more contemporary art, like the conceptual works of Giulio Paolini. Curators place them beside examples from Rauschenberg\u2019s <\/span><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imj.org.il\/sites\/default\/files\/collections\/Rauschenberg-Hoarfrost%20Tiger~B75_0723.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Hoarfrost<\/span><\/a><\/em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imj.org.il\/sites\/default\/files\/collections\/Rauschenberg-Hoarfrost%20Tiger~B75_0723.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> series<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> of draped silkscreen prints, linking the artist to Italian art movements like Arte Povera. And finally, the Museo del Novecento highlights one of Rauschenberg\u2019s final projects, the Rauschenberg Overseas Cultural Interchange (ROCI). <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> was an initiative to expedite artistic and cultural exchange that the artist founded in 1984. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">To represent this chapter in Rauschenberg\u2019s life,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> the museum displays the 1985 work<\/span><em> <a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/cdn.finestresullarte.info\/rivista\/immagini\/2025\/fn\/rauschenberg-onoto-snare.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Onoto Snare \/ ROCI Venezuela<\/span><\/a><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> According to the museum, the work, made from a combination of images and found objects, represents the artist\u2019s spirit of collaboration, the main theme of this year\u2019s miart show.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><em>Rauschenberg and the Twentieth Century<\/em> will run at the Museo del Novecento <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">through June 29th<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A museum in Milan dedicated mainly to modern Italian art is hosting an exhibition dedicated to someone unexpected: the American artist Robert Rauschenberg.
