La Le\u00e7on d’\u00e9criture<\/em> by Pierre-Auguste Renoir<\/p><\/div>\n

Immediately before their 20th\/21st Century evening sale on Wednesday, April 9th, Christie\u2019s Paris hosted a short auction featuring the personal collection of Henri Canonne.<\/span><\/p>\n

Canonne was a pharmaceutical entrepreneur who, starting in the 1920s, assembled one of the most impressive collections of Impressionist and modern artworks <\/span>in the world<\/span>. Since his death in 1961, the Canonne family has held onto his collection until consigning many of the works to Christie\u2019s. The hour-long sale featured works mainly by European painters like Utrillo and Boudin. But on Wednesday, Renoir\u2019s works took the top spots. <\/span>La Le\u00e7on d\u2019\u00e9criture<\/span><\/em>, or <\/span>The Writing Lesson<\/span><\/em>, is dated circa 1905 and is believed to show the artist\u2019s son Claude with long hair, which was fashionable at the time. The maternal figure giving him his lesson <\/span>is <\/span>believed<\/span> to be the boy\u2019s nurse, Gabrielle Renard, who appears in <\/span>several of Renoir\u2019s paintings<\/span><\/a>. An alternate version of this painting is on display <\/span>at the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia<\/span><\/a>. Christie\u2019s expected this work to be the <\/span>star of the sale<\/span>, giving it a presale estimate range of \u20ac2 million to \u20ac3 million. However, the Renoir fell just short, hammering at \u20ac1.95 million \/ $2.15 million (or \u20ac2.4 million \/ $2.65 million w\/p).<\/span><\/p>\n

Nu sur un fauteuil<\/em> by Pierre-Auguste Renoir<\/p><\/div>\n

Another Renoir came up in second place. <\/span>Nu sur un fauteuil<\/span><\/em> is a simple feminine nude dating to about 1900. Female nudes were one of the artist\u2019s most common subjects, as he drew <\/span>a great amount of<\/span> inspiration from the female form. <\/span>This<\/span> has drawn criticism from <\/span>more recent assessments of Renoir\u2019s work<\/span><\/a>, but later artists have cited these nudes as a source of inspiration, including Picasso. Christie\u2019s anticipated <\/span>Nu sur un fauteuil<\/span><\/em> to become the sales second-place lot, giving it a high estimate of \u20ac700K. With several interested buyers, the final price steadily rose until it came close to double that number at \u20ac1.3 million \/ $1.4 million (or \u20ac1.6 million \/ $1.78 million w\/p). Another female nude followed the Renoir, this one by Pierre Bonnard. <\/span>Femme \u00e0 demi-nue ou Nu se coiffant devant la glace<\/span><\/em> shows a young <\/span>woman,<\/span> dressed only from the waist down, combing her hair in front of a mirror. Bonnard was part of a generation of painters that came after the Impressionists, inspired mainly by C\u00e9zanne and Gauguin. Bonnard, together with painters like <\/span>Vuillard<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>S\u00e9rusier<\/span><\/a>, and others, formed what became known as Les Nabis, whose work Henri Canonne was an avid collector. Along with the two Renoir paintings, the Bonnard was the only other painting Christie\u2019s specialists predicted would sell for more than \u20ac100K. They predicted it would between \u20ac350K and \u20ac550K. The hammer eventually came down on the slightly higher end at \u20ac490K \/ $541.2K (or \u20ac617.4K \/ $681.9K w\/p).<\/span><\/p>\n

Femme \u00e0 demi-nue ou Nu se coiffant devant la glace<\/em> by Pierre Bonnard<\/p><\/div>\n

With such a small sale, there were only a few surprises. A total of three lots sold for more than twice their high estimate. Among them were <\/span>a winter street scene by Maurice de Vlaminck<\/span><\/a> and <\/span>a watercolor by Johan Jongkind<\/span><\/a>. The Jongkind shows a chateau in the north of Provence, while the opposite side has <\/span>a chalk drawing of the coast of the Gulf of Trieste<\/span><\/a>. Fourteen of the thirty lots were Jongkind watercolors, mainly landscapes <\/span>made<\/span> between 1877 and 1888. Christie\u2019s expected the Ch\u00e2teau de Lesdigui\u00e8res watercolor to sell for no more than \u20ac1.8K, yet sold for \u20ac3.8K \/ $4.2K (or \u20ac4.8K \/ $5.3K w\/p).<\/span><\/p>\n

Of the thirty lots available on Wednesday, thirteen sold within their estimates, giving Christie\u2019s a 43% accuracy rate. <\/span>An additional eleven<\/span> (37%) sold above their estimates, while five (17%) sold below. With only one lot going unsold (<\/span>a watercolor by Andr\u00e9 Dunoyer de Segonzac<\/span><\/a>), Christie\u2019s achieved a 97% sell-through rate. So despite <\/span>La Le\u00e7on d\u2019\u00e9criture<\/span><\/em> falling slightly short of its estimate, the Canonne collection as a whole did very well, bringing in \u20ac4.3 million \/ $4.77 million against a low estimate of \u20ac3.2 million. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
