However, it all turned out to be a stunt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Last week, I received messages from people asking me about a Rembrandt painting confiscated by the FBI right off the walls of the gallery in Manhattan\u2019s Chelsea neighborhood. I looked at the videos, and nothing seemed right. The videos appeared to have <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">been taken<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> at a gallery opening with many people assembled. Meanwhile, three men in navy blue FBI windbreakers came in, took the painting off the wall, and walked out. Several users posted videos of the incident on social media platforms like Instagram, <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DHKvOiFMDGO\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">most notably David Ma<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">First red flag: the FBI doesn\u2019t just come in with a few guys. They come in with the cavalry, shutting down the location and removing the confiscated art completely packaged and sealed. <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/art-world\/fbi-raids-danieli-fine-art-worth-avenue-palm-beach-florida-2049239\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The FBI\u2019s 2021 raid on the Danieli Galerie in Palm Beach<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> is a good example. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In the posted videos, these alleged agents <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">simply<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> entered the gallery before a crowd and walked out with the painting.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> But then there was the other red flag. The work they seized was easily recognizable as <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Storm on the Sea of Galilee<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> by Rembrandt. There\u2019s only one problem, though \u2013 <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Storm on the Sea of Galilee<\/span><\/em> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">was stolen<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> in 1990 from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. The Rembrandt was one of thirteen works of art stolen in that heist, along with <\/span><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/c\/c8\/Vermeer_The_concert.JPG\/800px-Vermeer_The_concert.JPG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Concert<\/span><\/a><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> by Johannes Vermeer, <\/span><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/b\/b4\/%C3%89douard_Manet%2C_Chez_Tortoni.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Chez Tortoni<\/span><\/a><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> by \u00c9douard Manet, and <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/5\/5a\/Isabella_Stewart_Gardner_Museum_theft%2C_FBI_%27Seeking_Information%27_poster_2013%2C_5_Degas_sketches.jpg\/1200px-Isabella_Stewart_Gardner_Museum_theft%2C_FBI_%27Seeking_Information%27_poster_2013%2C_5_Degas_sketches.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">several sketches by Edgar Degas<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Collectively, the stolen works <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">are valued<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> at $500 million, and the Gardner Museum still offers a $10 million reward for information leading to its recovery. Even in recent years, <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/2021\/12\/the-gardner-museum-heist-one-step-closer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">different clues and pieces of evidence have surfaced<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, bringing greater clarity or confusion to the tracking down of stolen art. I suspected, therefore, that these recent videos were not showing us a legitimate FBI seizure but something entirely different.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">From what I could find<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, the only publication to look into this incident is <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Observer<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, which revealed the incident as a work of performance art. An organization called 13 Masterpieces set up a gallery show starting last Thursday, March 13, at the Chelsea Walls Gallery on 10th Avenue. The promotional material very cryptically advertised that the show would feature \u201clegendary artworks that have not been seen by the public for 35 years \u2014 until now.\u201d It seems the show consisted of reproductions of the works stolen in the Gardner heist. The organizers were thorough in their attempts to conceal their identities. However, some suspected that the production company DVRG may have been involved. <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Observer<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> eventually confirmed that the staged raid was organized by DVRG in collaboration with the film <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Any Day Now<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, a fictionalization of the Gardner Museum heist set to come out later this year.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Videos spread all over social media last week allegedly showing FBI agents seizing a painting right off the walls of a Manhattan gallery.
