I\u2019ve written several times about Fran\u00e7oise Gilot, her ten-year relationship with Pablo Picasso, and how, since her passing, her work has begun to receive greater attention and respect from academics, collectors, and museum-goers. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> is especially true in France, <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/2024\/03\/gilot-at-the-picasso-museum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">where she had been a pariah<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> thanks to Picasso\u2019s influence after she broke off their relationship. Something very similar seems to have happened to Camille Claudel, the great French sculptor mainly known as the student and companion of Auguste Rodin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">La Jeunesse et L&#8217;\u00c2ge M\u00fbr <\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">(<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Youth and the Age of Maturity<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">) is a bronze sculpture Claudel began creating around 1894, around two years after she and Rodin separated. The French government initially commissioned the sculpture, but they canceled the contract several years later, before Claudel could cast anything in bronze. The work shows three nude figures: a young woman is on her knees, taking an older man by the hand, almost beckoning him to stay. Meanwhile, an older woman is drawing him away. It <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">is meant<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> to represent the progression of life and aging. Some, however, have interpreted the work as representative of Claudel\u2019s romantic life with Rodin. The main reason why Rodin broke things off with Claudel is because he wanted to prioritize the relationship he had with Rose Beuret, with whom he had a son. So many have interpreted <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">La Jeunesse et L&#8217;\u00c2ge M\u00fbr <\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">as representing Beuret taking Rodin away from Claudel. Many have noticed that the young kneeling woman does bear a resemblance to the artist, while the male figure is someone reminiscent of Rodin\u2019s work <\/span><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.arthipo.com\/image\/cache\/catalog\/artists-painters\/a\/auguste-rodin\/ardn118-auguste-rodin-le-monument-aux-bourgeois-de-calais-858x644.webp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Les Bourgeois de Calais<\/span><\/a><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The work was rediscovered in an abandoned apartment last year, making it the fourth still-existing casting of the statue. The Mus\u00e9e d\u2019Orsay, the Mus\u00e9e Claudel, and the Mus\u00e9e Rodin <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">own<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> the other versions. This one was cast in 1907 from the same mold as the Mus\u00e9e Claudel version. These versions are part of a series of six and were made at one-third the size of the earlier castings. The bronze <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">was consigned<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> to the auction house Philocale, whose employees were the ones to discover the statue as they <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">were asked<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> to take an inventory of the apartment\u2019s contents by the new owner. On Sunday, <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">La Jeunesse et L&#8217;\u00c2ge M\u00fbr <\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">crossed the block with specialists anticipating that it would sell for between \u20ac1.5 million and \u20ac2 million. The Claudel would end up doubling that number, selling for \u20ac3.1 million (or \u20ac3.7 million w\/p), becoming the second most valuable work by the artist ever sold. Claudel\u2019s auction record was set in 2013 at Sotheby\u2019s London when her 1892 work <\/span><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.christies.com\/img\/LotImages\/2018\/CKS\/2018_CKS_15483_0041B_000(camille_claudel_la_valse_or_les_valseurs_grand_modele082613).jpg?mode=max\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">La Valse<\/span><\/a><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> sold for \u00a35.1 million (about $8 million).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> is just another milestone in the greater appreciation of Claudel\u2019s work. Many point to 1988 as the time the general public began to reevaluate her life and career since that year saw the release of a popular biopic <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Camille Claudel<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> featuring Isabelle Adjani as the titular sculptor and Gerard Depardieu as Rodin. Her popularity has since grown, with the Mus\u00e9e Claudel <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">being<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> established<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> in Nogent-sur-Seine in 2016.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A bronze sculpture by Camille Claudel thought to have been lost for over a century sold in Paris for \u20ac3.1 million.
