Born in Ethiopia and studying art in both the United States and Senegal, Mehretu creates what David Adjaye of <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Time <\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">described as \u201cabstract three-dimensional landscapes that represent our often chaotic socio-political climate\u201d. She maintains a studio in Manhattan\u2019s Chelsea neighborhood, which makes it easy to also serve as a trustee of the nearby Whitney Museum. Museum admission prices have been climbing <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">in recent years<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, and the Whitney is no exception. An adult ticket currently costs $30. Visitors aged 18 and under, however, can visit free of charge. And now, thanks to a large donation from several board members, $2 million of which came from Mehretu, the Whitney Museum will soon be expanding its free admission policy to all visitors aged 25 and under.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Whitney already offers free admission to all visitors on Fridays between 5:00 and 10:00pm, as well as all day on the second Sunday <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">every<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> month. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Demographic data the Whitney collected indicates that free admission is incredibly effective in attracting <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">not only<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> more visitors in general<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, but<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> a younger, more diverse crowd.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> During the <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">times<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> free admission was in effect, half of all visitors were visiting the museum for the first time. Additionally, 80% of visitors aged 25 and under cite free admission as one of the main reasons for their visit. Scott Rothkopf, museum director, also commented that expanding the museum\u2019s free admission policy will help achieve one of the administration\u2019s goals \u201cto go even further in making the Whitney one of the most accessible large museums in America\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">According to Rothkopf, this is an issue Mehretu has been pushing <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">ever<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> since he assumed his post in November 2023. Mehretu stated that the need for increased access to the arts for young people was the primary motivation behind her donation. \u201cYou can\u2019t have any conversations around diversity, equity and inclusion without providing access, and the culture can\u2019t change and it can\u2019t continue to grow without new and diverse voices having access to the culture being created at the moment.\u201d With arts funding being cut in <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/entertainment\/art\/2024\/09\/04\/desantis-florida-art-funding-cuts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Florida<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/houstonlanding.org\/houston-cuts-public-art-funds-in-first-step-toward-reducing-187-million-budget-deficit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Texas<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, and across the pond <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/culture\/article\/2024\/jul\/21\/britain-behind-europe-in-arts-funding-and-education-crisis-report-shows\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">in Britain<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, young people\u2019s ability to access cultural centers and the content they provide is more important now than ever. Many major New York museums like the Metropolitan Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Guggenheim already offer some form of free admission or pay-what-you-wish.
