Since then, it has been influential in sculpture, figure drawing, and the genesis of neoclassicism in the eighteenth century. The sculpture is likely a second-century CE Roman marble copy of a fourth-century BCE Greek bronze statue showing Apollo as an archer. Countless artists, including <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/a\/ab\/Albrecht_D%C3%BCrer%2C_Adam_and_Eve%2C_1504%2C_Engraving.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Albrecht D\u00fcrer<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/9\/96\/Joshua_Reynolds_-_Portrait_of_Omai.jpg\/640px-Joshua_Reynolds_-_Portrait_of_Omai.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Sir Joshua Reynolds<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, and <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/2\/28\/Persus-with-the-head-of-med.jpg\/800px-Persus-with-the-head-of-med.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Antonio Canova<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, have copied its pose and proportions for five centuries. Others, <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/en\/thumb\/1\/1b\/De_Chirico%27s_Love_Song.jpg\/800px-De_Chirico%27s_Love_Song.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">like Giorgio de Chirico<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, have included parts of the statue <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">itself<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> in their work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The sculpture\u2019s restoration began at the end of 2019 when museum specialists noticed certain weaknesses in its structural integrity. However, the project became delayed after Italy became one of the countries hardest hit by the pandemic. When specialists and technicians could finally access the sculpture, they made great progress after installing carbon fiber and steel supports into the Apollo\u2019s base to relieve pressure on the statue\u2019s legs. A similar solution had been put in place once before in the early nineteenth century by the neoclassical sculptor Antonio Canova. The team also had to replace the statue\u2019s left hand, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">itself<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> a sixteenth-century reconstruction. While cleaning the stone, the project specialists discovered a purple stain on the Apollo\u2019s head. After analysis, they concluded that this was residue from a compound used to apply gold leaf to the statue\u2019s hair.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This past Monday, October 14th, Cardinal Fernando V\u00e9rgez Alzaga helped unveil the newly restored statue in its normal spot in the Vatican Museums. Given the importance of the sculpture, the Vatican Museums funded the project through its wide network of supporters and donors organized in its Patrons of the Arts system, with the New York and Illinois branches contributing a great deal of money. Several outside organizations provided funding and technical aid in the <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Apollo Belvedere\u2019s<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> restoration, including the Italian state\u2019s Museum &amp;
