While these sales are not rare at the major auction houses, this particular auction seemed to be of great interest to many eager buyers, given the surprising results. The auction consisted of twentieth-century works by Chagall and Dali <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">as well as<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> older works on paper from earlier modernists like Matisse and Renoir. Ultimately, a Picasso took the top spot with <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">T\u00eate de Mousquetaire<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Picasso created this pastel, chalk, and ink drawing a year before his death, inscribing a dedication on the back to his wife, Jacqueline. It\u2019s a small drawing, measuring only 8 \u00bc by-5 \u00be inches, yet Christie\u2019s gave it an estimate range of \u00a3150K to \u00a3250K. <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">T\u00eate de Mousquetaire<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> became one of the many works in the sale that sold for far above its expected range, more than doubling the high estimate figure and hammering at \u00a3540K \/ $706.2K (or \u00a3680.4K \/ $889.8K w\/p).<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_55225\" style=\"width: 249px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/jean-francois-millet-les-planteurs-de-pommes-de-terre.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-55225\" class=\" wp-image-55225\" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/jean-francois-millet-les-planteurs-de-pommes-de-terre-300x224.jpg\" alt=\"A drawing of farmers planting seeds in a field.\" width=\"239\" height=\"178\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/jean-francois-millet-les-planteurs-de-pommes-de-terre-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/jean-francois-millet-les-planteurs-de-pommes-de-terre.jpg 630w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 239px) 100vw, 239px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-55225\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Les planteurs de pommes de terre<\/em> by Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Millet<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Les planteurs de pommes de terre <\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">is a preliminary sketch by Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Millet for <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/0\/0f\/Millet-les-planteurs-de-pommes-de-terre.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the artist\u2019s 1861 painting of the same name<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. It shows the titular potato farmers planting seed potatoes for a later crop. It seems very typical of the artist\u2019s work, combining Barbizon landscape painting with scenes of nineteenth-century French peasant life. It dates to around 1859 or 1860, mostly made from black chalk with bits done with crayon and pastel. However, Millet made other sketches and drawings of the same figures as early as 1851. This drawing last sold at Sotheby\u2019s New York in 2016 for $334K w\/p, and it seems Christie\u2019s expected its value to have remained the same over the eight years. Specialists only expected it to sell for <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">no more than<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> \u00a3250K, yet several interested parties brought the final hammer price up to \u00a3350K \/ $457.7K (or \u00a3441K \/ $576.7K w\/p). And finally, in the sale\u2019s third-place spot, one of the more interesting works to cross the block that day was another Picasso. <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Hibou, Autoportrait<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> is one of the artist\u2019s most fascinating multimedia works. With the title literally meaning <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Owl, Self-Portrait<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, Picasso made an owl drawing with black pastel, cutting out almond-shaped spaces to insert images of the artist\u2019s own eyes. For this, Picasso used David Douglas Duncan\u2019s photograph <\/span><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/sites.utexas.edu\/ransomcentermagazine\/files\/2014\/03\/Picasso-768x517.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Pablo Picasso\u2019s Eyes, La Californie, Canne 1957<\/span><\/a><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, a copy of which also sold at Christie\u2019s that day for \u00a317.6K \/ $23.1 w\/p (est. \u00a34K to \u00a36K). Picasso dedicates the drawing to Duncan in the bottom right-hand corner. As far as his drawings go, an estimated range of \u00a3150K to \u00a3250K is not bad. But given the multimedia composition and the incredibly unique and personal subject, it\u2019s not surprising that the work ended up selling for over its high estimate at \u00a3340K \/ $444.6K (or \u00a3428.4K \/ $560.2K w\/p).<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_55226\" style=\"width: 161px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/f1a85a74fe55d3f62d451b4a3ce11ed6.webp\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-55226\" class=\" wp-image-55226\" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/f1a85a74fe55d3f62d451b4a3ce11ed6-205x300.webp\" alt=\"A drawing of an owl with human eyes\" width=\"151\" height=\"221\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/f1a85a74fe55d3f62d451b4a3ce11ed6-205x300.webp 205w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/f1a85a74fe55d3f62d451b4a3ce11ed6.webp 410w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 151px) 100vw, 151px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-55226\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Hibou, Autoportrait<\/em> by Pablo Picasso<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Though not included in the top lots, one of the sale\u2019s highlights was the number and variety of works by Marc Chagall. Twenty-three works, about a quarter of the total lots, were by Chagall, with eighteen selling above their high estimates. In fact, seventeen sold for more than double that number. The most valuable Chagall was the gouache and watercolor work <\/span><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.artnet.com\/WebServices\/images\/ll00136lldz87JFgPNECfDrCWPTHRac4b4G\/marc-chagall-les-amoureux-au-bouquet-rouge.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Les amoureux au bouquet rouge<\/span><\/a><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, which sold for \u00a3352.8K \/ $461.4K w\/p. But probably the biggest of Chagall\u2019s surprises, the biggest of the sale, was a pair of ink drawings. Both are rather plain, with just India ink, no color, yet unmistakably in Chagall&#8217;s style, especially <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.christies.com\/img\/LotImages\/2024\/CKS\/2024_CKS_23936_0130_000(marc_chagall_lane_au_violon093542).jpg?mode=max\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the 1969 <em>variation autour<\/em><\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Christie\u2019s specialists are unsure if the drawing was for Chagall\u2019s painting <\/span><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/media.mutualart.com\/Images\/2009_07\/05\/0123\/499602\/ca53ee48-f9e0-4977-8b0c-14973e824e2c_g_570.Jpeg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Songe du Clown<\/span><\/a><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> or <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">for<\/span> <em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/d7hftxdivxxvm.cloudfront.net\/?height=800&amp;quality=85&amp;resize_to=fit&amp;src=https%3A%2F%2Fd32dm0rphc51dk.cloudfront.net%2Fuv7nVu0NnCxlCnxp1SGCug%2Fmain.jpg&amp;width=600\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Printemps<\/span><\/a><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. It makes more sense that it was a drawing for <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Songe du Clown<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> since he finished the painting the same year, while <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Printemps <\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">was completed<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> back in 1938. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Chagall, however, could have <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">simply<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> returned to the theme later.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Christie\u2019s expected the drawing to sell for no more than \u00a3700, with the other for <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">no more than<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> \u00a3600. The <em>variation autour<\/em> ended up selling for \u00a311K \/ $14.4K (or \u00a313.9K \/ $18.1K w\/p), while the other drawing, <\/span><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.christies.com\/img\/LotImages\/2024\/CKS\/2024_CKS_23936_0131_000(marc_chagall_au_bord_de_la_riviere093549).jpg?mode=max\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Au bord de la rivi\u00e8re<\/span><\/a><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, sold for \u00a316K \/ $20.9K (or \u00a320.2K \/ $26.4K w\/p). <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Their hammer prices were<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, respectively,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> 15.7 and 26.7 times higher than their high estimates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Fifty-three lots (58%) sold above their estimates, twenty-nine of which achieved more than double the high estimate. Six lots sold for more than five times the high estimate. Fifteen lots (16%) sold below estimate, while seven (8%) went unsold, giving the sale a strong 92% sell-through rate. Even though only sixteen of the ninety-one lots total (18%) sold within their estimates, the <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">sale as a whole should have done<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> phenomenally well.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> However, of the seven unsold lots, Christie&#8217;s had given three particularly high estimate ranges. Henri Matisse&#8217;s ink drawing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.christies.com\/img\/LotImages\/2024\/CKS\/2024_CKS_23936_0175_000(henri_matisse_deux_odalisques082107).jpg?mode=max\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Deux Odalisques<\/em><\/a> (est. \u00a3100K to \u00a3150K), Franz Marc&#8217;s gouache, tempera, and charcoal drawing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnet.com\/WebServices\/images\/ll00149lldz87JFgPNECfDrCWvaHBOc4b4G\/franz-marc-rotes-rind.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Rotes Rind<\/em><\/a> (est. \u00a3120K to \u00a3180K), and George Grosz&#8217;s watercolor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.christies.com\/img\/LotImages\/2010\/CKS\/2010_CKS_07831_0036_000(010929).jpg?mode=max\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Orgie<\/em> <\/a>(est. \u00a3350K to \u00a3550K) all failed to find buyers that day. So it seems that the lots that sold over their estimates merely compensated for the small number of lots bought in. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Christie\u2019s predicted the entire auction to bring anywhere between \u00a33.7 million and \u00a35.7 million.
