Among the works on display was <\/span><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/hyperallergic-newspack.s3.amazonaws.com\/uploads\/2024\/09\/BIG_AIWE2009_07de-1-1-1200x1800.jpg?resize=780%2C1170&amp;quality=95&amp;ssl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Porcelain Cube<\/span><\/a><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Ai posted CCTV footage of the incident <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DAJlPfdMhGB\/?img_index=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">on his Instagram page<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, which shows the perpetrator knocking over the sculpture and holding a piece over his head in some sort of performance. Ai was in the next room when the destruction took place. \u201cI rushed inside to find chaos.\u201d He later called the act \u201cunacceptable\u201d, and lamented that additional security would not have prevented the sculpture\u2019s destruction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Following the incident, police arrested a 57-year-old Czech man named Vaclav Pisvejc. Arturo Galansino, the director of the Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi in Florence who also curated the Ai exhibition, told reporters that this is not the first time Pisvejc has caused a scene. He is an artist himself, mainly creating abstract portraits that seem like <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.saatchiart.com\/pisvejc?srsltid=AfmBOoo5JWLTMzpKnj9se8YOkS-6xHBf5l5HHGWCOGb8GFCVKamf2ThJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">mixes between Willem de Kooning and Francis Bacon<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. In 2018, Galansino organized an event at the Palazzo Strozzi for the performance artist Marina Abramovi\u0107. Pisvejc approached Abramovi\u0107 with a portrait of her that he had created, <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/whitehotmagazine.com\/articles\/head-in-name-art-\/4052\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">hitting her over the head with it<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Pisvejc has pulled off other provocative stunts, including standing naked in the Piazza della Signoria in Florence until police took him away. In that same square, during an art show several months later, Pisvejc sprayed red paint onto Urs Fischer\u2019s sculpture <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Big Clay #4<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/artslife.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/La-scultura-di-Urs-Fischer-vandalizzata-a-Firenze.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">making a large spot that remained for some time<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. In 2022, Pisvejc <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.finestresullarte.info\/en\/news\/six-months-in-jail-for-serial-provocateur-who-set-fire-to-david-s-drape-in-florence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">set fire to the black shroud the city of Florence had draped over the copy of Michelangelo\u2019s <em>David<\/em><\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> in front of the Palazzo Vecchio (done in commemoration of the victims of Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The exhibition, titled <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Who Am I?<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, explores Ai\u2019s \u201cconstant tension between tradition and experimentation, preservation and destruction\u201d. Several works featured in the exhibit deal with the theme of destruction, including <\/span><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/blogger.googleusercontent.com\/img\/b\/R29vZ2xl\/AVvXsEhoysGftraXoNgxzxAEkyq76PlSzC3KKDH9ESFmAeUwuyWBdtqcitKIYR5g06bdOqobvM9tFo_DQJS4Yz8Lb78A31CJ6g64IGxINr1LQE_kMFyZTWUQqiMu3IKC2InGXzSFOf_s4FJscn6ePC0Io2A_K8gdKXoMnkRrjCusFY-45FljD7QqS2yayIC_2Qw\/w1200-h630-p-k-no-nu\/Ai%20Weiwei%20-%20Backpack%20Snake%20&amp;%20Left%20Right%20Studio%20Material%20(513).jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Left\/Right Studio Material<\/span><\/a><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> and <\/span><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.guggenheim.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/art-ai-weiwei-dropping-a-han-dynasty-urn.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Dropping a Han Dynasty Urn<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Of course, with few exceptions, destroying a work of art is in poor taste regardless of the perpetrator\u2019s reasons. But with China\u2019s government <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/2024\/09\/chinese-artist-gao-zhen-arrested-for-defaming-heroes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">increasingly putting its boot on the neck of the country\u2019s cultural sector<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, damaging or destroying cultural items by a prominent Chinese dissident artist is in extremely poor taste. It almost trivializes the repression artists face at the hands of restrictive governments. Few people seem to support Pisvejc and his work, so this will make him an even greater social pariah.
