This move would put Sotheby\u2019s in a more central location, which is nice since their current York Avenue spot seems a little out-of-the-way. Plus, the Breuer Building\u2019s brutalist architecture certainly makes it stand out. But now it\u2019s Bonhams\u2019 turn to move. Bonhams first opened a New York location in 2005, moving into the retail space at 580 Madison in 2008.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Their new location, the Steinway Tower, is a mishmash of a building. It <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">was originally built in the 1920s<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> as Steinwall Hall for the piano company Steinway &amp; Sons by the Warren &amp; Wetmore architecture firm. The sixteen-story building had elegant neoclassical columns and statues adorning the front door. The same firm also designed New York\u2019s <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/697d08be.rocketcdn.me\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/iStock-622293502-2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Grand Central Terminal<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, the <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/collectionsofwaikiki.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/Royal-Hawaiian-Hotel-header-scaled.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Royal Hawaiian Hotel<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> in Waikiki, and <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/bloximages.newyork1.vip.townnews.com\/gazette.com\/content\/tncms\/assets\/v3\/editorial\/7\/a9\/7a9ee4d0-ad9e-11ed-9b8c-0f3c93862338\/63ed905a266af.image.jpg?crop=1198%2C1198%2C265%2C0&amp;resize=1200%2C1200&amp;order=crop%2Cresize\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the Broadmoor Hotel<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> in Colorado Springs. Steinway used the building for offices, a saleroom, and a recital space until 2012. After that, the new owners turned Steinway Hall into a residential building. In doing so, they constructed <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/media.cnn.com\/api\/v1\/images\/stellar\/prod\/221124121454-01-steinway-skyscaper-restricted.jpg?q=w_1110,c_fill\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">an 84-story modern pencil-style skyscraper<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> adjacent to the preexisting building and lumped the two structures under the same address. The Steinway Tower is now the third tallest building in New York City <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">and <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">is<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> often grouped<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> with the Central Park Tower and 432 Park Avenue (the retail space of which houses Phillips New York) as part of the incredibly tall and incredibly slender Billionaire\u2019s Row skyscrapers on the southern border of Central Park. Many New Yorkers have criticized the construction of these opulent, supertall luxury apartment buildings. However, investigations into money laundering and tax avoidance have dissuaded many from buying units in these buildings and, therefore, have decreased demand for these structures altogether.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Bonhams\u2019 executive chairman Hans-Kristian Hoejsgaard expressed his excitement about the move, saying, \u201cIt demonstrates our unwavering commitment to the U.S. market. The Steinway Hall symbolizes Bonhams\u2019 commitment to heritage \u2013 and the way in which we\u2019re embracing the future.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201d<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> After certain additions are made, the new Bonhams headquarters will have two salerooms, four floors of galleries, extensive storerooms, and <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/cdn.sanity.io\/images\/cxgd3urn\/production\/3eb923d96144249e6ea11dbe7a8b61e0ad98ae62-1174x893.jpg?w=640&amp;h=487&amp;fit=crop&amp;auto=format\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">an 80-foot glass atrium next door to the building<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. The new space will have modern amenities while keeping some of its historical charm. Bonhams has expanded rapidly recently, acquiring small auction houses in Europe and the United States, including Cornette de Saint Cyr in Paris and Skinner in Marlborough, Massachusetts. Therefore, hopefully, a new headquarters location in New York will be emblematic of the bigger things to come.
