Many see Kus\u00e1\u2019s dismissal as part of a purge of Slovakia\u2019s cultural institutions. Other cultural leaders without jobs include the now-former directors of the National Theater, the National Library, and the Bibiana children\u2019s museum in Bratislava. The cultural ministry has given vague or insufficient justifications for the firings if it provided any reason <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">at all<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. The most recent development in this ongoing saga is that the National Opera\u2019s director, Martin Leginus, <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/spectator.sme.sk\/c\/23373235\/news-digest-national-opera-director-resigns-amid-failed-attempts-to-oust-culture-minister.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">has tendered his resignation<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> after parliament failed to oust \u0160imkovi\u010dov\u00e1 after two no-confidence votes. These votes occurred during a special session, so the opposition parties\u2019 efforts must continue when parliament reconvenes in September.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Many expected changes to the cultural sector with \u0160imkovi\u010dov\u00e1\u2019s appointment in October 2023. While Prime Minister Roberto Fico has <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">been described<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> as a populist leftist, \u0160imkovi\u010dov\u00e1\u2019s appointment results from his party\u2019s coalition with the conservative Slovak National Party. \u0160imkovi\u010dov\u00e1\u2019s statements as a member of parliament from 2016 to 2020 and now as cultural minister have <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">been described<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> as nationalist, racist, homophobic, xenophobic, and anti-Semitic. In 2018, Slovakia\u2019s Human Rights Institute named her \u201chomophobe of the year\u201d. Now-former National Theater director Matej Drli\u010dka stated that \u0160imkovi\u010dov\u00e1\u2019s first statement as cultural minister seemed \u201clike a fascist declaration\u201d and that her appointment was when he realized \u201cwe were entering a new culture war.\u201d Her conduct as cultural minister has drawn comparisons to Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orb\u00e1n\u2019s <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2023\/dec\/13\/crackdown-on-foreign-interventions-decried-by-hungarian-media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">recent crackdowns on media and cultural institutions<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">On August 12th and 13th<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/2024\/08\/13\/thousands-protest-in-bratislava-over-sacking-of-national-theatre-and-gallery-heads\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">thousands filled the streets of Bratislava<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> to protest these purges. On the first day of the demonstrations, over three hundred artists and cultural sector employees from across Europe signed an open letter opposing these dismissals. Since then, another one hundred fifty have added their names. The signatories include the directors and curators of Amsterdam\u2019s Stedelijk\u00a0 Museum, Barcelona\u2019s Museum of Contemporary Art, Madrid\u2019s Reina Sof\u00eda Museum, Warsaw\u2019s Museum of Modern Art, Zagreb\u2019s Museum of Contemporary Art. The letter states that Kus\u00e1\u2019s dismissal \u201cundermined the independence of the cultural field\u201d and \u201cdamaged the trust in and reputation of Slovak culture internationally.\u201d The signatories further wrote, \u201cWe ask you to reject the direct political control of cultural institutions and defend the right of art and artists to freedom of expression.\u201d On top of the open letter, a petition has circulated to reverse the dismissals, collecting over 180,000 signatures. The National Gallery\u2019s staff has issued a statement in support of its former director, writing that the museum \u201cstands firmly behind Alexandra Kus\u00e1, recognizing the immense effort, time, expertise, humanity, innovative vision, and<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> a<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">t times, superhuman dedication she has invested in building a national cultural institution that truly understands the real meaning and value of the words \u2018national,\u2019 \u2018culture,\u2019 and \u2018institution.\u2019\u201d Six former Slovak culture ministers have also spoken out against \u0160imkovi\u010dov\u00e1.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Commentators have expressed confidence in the resistance from Slovakian protestors and cultural figures worldwide. They also seem to think little of the nationalists who support these changes. Drli\u010dka has stated, \u201cThey haven\u2019t proposed an alternative vision.
