Almost seven hundred items have been identified, located, and returned nearly a year after the theft\u2019s initial discovery. However, this does not mean it has been all good for the museum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In recent years, the British Museum has almost always been <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">embroiled in controversy<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, ranging from restitution cases to the institution\u2019s environmental impact. Therefore, regarding public opinion, the British Museum was already in a slightly weakened state with a decent portion of the British and worldwide population when news of the Higgs theft rocked the museum world. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Recent reports<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0show that this disapproval may <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">now be extending<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> to museum donations.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> According to Max Kendix writing for <\/span><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/uk\/arts\/article\/british-museum-broke-law-over-missing-artefacts-6zsxk2nrp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Times<\/span><\/a><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, individual contributions amounted to only \u00a37.5 million this most recent fiscal year compared to the previous year\u2019s \u00a325 million. Furthermore, the museum administration has now admitted that the Higgs theft may have <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">been enabled<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> by museum staff and leadership violating British law.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Under the Public Records Act, the British Museum is considered a \u201cplace of deposit\u201d, used for storage by the National Archives. According to the National Archives, these places of deposit must meet certain standards regarding the care and conservation of the items in question and public access to them. The National Archives adheres to the guidelines of both the British Standards Institution and the European Standards Organizations, which both publish guidelines on \u201cthe location, construction and arrangement of building specifically intended for internal storage of all heritage collection types and formats.\u201d <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/media\/66ad0064a3c2a28abb50dc6e\/British_Museum_Annual_Report_and_Accounts_2023_to_204.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The museum\u2019s most recent annual report<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> states that the British Museum is not compliant with these standards following an internal audit. Museum chairman George Osborne said they are \u201ccontinuing to work with the National Archives towards compliance\u201d. The museum plans on achieving this by \u201cscrutinising areas of perceived higher risk\u201d and \u201cconcentrating on implementing agreed changes recommended by the Independent Review. These changes relate to collection management, security procedures and processes and governance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Higgs theft exposed the many gaps and flaws in the British Museum\u2019s security, which its leadership has either negligently allowed or <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/2023\/09\/british-museum-theft-the-root-cause\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">even<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> maliciously encouraged over the years<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. As a place of deposit under the Public Records Act, the British Museum can have a good chunk of its collection transferred to a different location. However, many commentators have deemed this unlikely. In the wake of the theft, the museum is working to completely digitize its entire collection, all eight million items, to prevent a theft like the one Higgs allegedly perpetrated from happening again. It\u2019s sad that in such a trove of the world\u2019s culture, heritage, and knowledge, it took the loss, damage, and destruction of thousands of items for substantial change to <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">be realized<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last time we checked on the British Museum, they were on their way to recovering nearly half of the Higgs theft.
