The collection\u2019s contents range from Old Master works to twentieth-century acquisitions. These include Vermeer\u2019s <\/span><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/b\/bc\/Johannes_Vermeer_-_Lady_at_the_Virginal_with_a_Gentleman%2C_%27The_Music_Lesson%27_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Music Lesson<\/span><\/a><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, Titian\u2019s <\/span><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/b\/be\/Titian_Bacchus_and_Ariadne.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Bacchus &amp; Ariadne<\/span><\/a><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, Warhol\u2019s <\/span><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/ca-times.brightspotcdn.com\/dims4\/default\/72583df\/2147483647\/strip\/true\/crop\/606x279+0+0\/resize\/1200x552!\/quality\/75\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fcalifornia-times-brightspot.s3.amazonaws.com%2F67%2F13%2F1442ab9f4e4d18b4ca87b0a5cec2%2Fla-et-cm-queen-elizabeth-portraits-warhol-roya-002\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Queen Elizabeth<\/span><\/a><\/em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/ca-times.brightspotcdn.com\/dims4\/default\/72583df\/2147483647\/strip\/true\/crop\/606x279+0+0\/resize\/1200x552!\/quality\/75\/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fcalifornia-times-brightspot.s3.amazonaws.com%2F67%2F13%2F1442ab9f4e4d18b4ca87b0a5cec2%2Fla-et-cm-queen-elizabeth-portraits-warhol-roya-002\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> prints<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, and countless royal portraits from various European painters. The museum was originally opened as the Queen\u2019s Gallery in 1962, using Buckingham Palace\u2019s south wing. Recently, the palace announced that it is planning an exhibition of works on paper, some of which have never <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">been exhibited<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> in Britain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The upcoming exhibition, <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Drawing the Italian Renaissance<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, will open on November 1st. It will feature nearly one hundred sixty pieces by eighty-one artists, mostly between 1450 and 1600. Twelve of these works have never been exhibited in Britain before, while thirty have never <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">been publicly displayed<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> at all. It is likely Britain\u2019s most comprehensive exhibition of Renaissance drawings ever organized. Some of the exhibition\u2019s highlights will include Raphael\u2019s red chalk drawing <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Three Graces<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, the metalpoint portrait <\/span><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/col.rct.uk\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/rctr-scale-1300-500\/public\/collection-online\/7\/b\/729877-1514994613.jpg?itok=1AmZCZIu\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Bust of a Cleric<\/span><\/a><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> attributed to Fra Angelico, and <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/cdn.sanity.io\/images\/cxgd3urn\/production\/8a7bad354747d393fe5a3af2c632b3909601b747-2324x3508.jpg?w=1920&amp;h=2898&amp;fit=crop&amp;auto=format\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">a study of an ostrich<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> by Titian. According to the gallery curator Martin Clayton, \u201cThese drawings cannot be on permanent display for conservation reasons, so the exhibition is a unique opportunity to see such a wide range of drawings up close and gain an insight into the minds of these great Italian Renaissance artists.\u201d The exhibition is an opportunity to show some of the royal collection\u2019s drawings and prints from the Renaissance period and to emphasize some of these artists\u2019 abilities at working with such media. For example, Clayton highlights artists such as Parmigianino and Andrea Sonsovino, known primarily as a painter and a sculptor, respectively. Therefore,<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Parmigianino\u2019s preparatory drawings and Sonsovino\u2019s designs and studies in the royal collection show their skills as draftsmen. It highlights the art of drawing as a respected medium in its own right and an absolutely necessary part of many other artistic media. As part of the exhibition, three artists-in-residence from the Royal Drawing School will be drawing in the gallery spaces three days per week while the exhibition is open.
