Now, the United States Department of Justice has confiscated a Picasso drawing used to conceal stolen money.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) was a sovereign wealth fund <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">that the<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Malaysian government used to attract foreign investment starting in 2009. In their mandatory <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">audit of the company<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, Malaysia\u2019s Auditor-General submitted a report detailing their findings. However, the country\u2019s National Security Council classified the report under the Official Secrets Act. A 2015 document leak exposed how Prime Minister Najib Razak, who made 1MDB into a state entity, <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/malaysian-investigators-probe-points-to-deposits-into-prime-ministers-accounts-1435866107\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">funneled roughly $700 million from the company into personal bank accounts<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. When Razak\u2019s party lost the 2018 general election, the new government subsequently declassified the audit, exposing how 1MDB was used to misappropriate billions of dollars. The scandal prompted investigations in Malaysia, the United States, Britain, Switzerland, Australia, and others. The FBI estimates stolen money adds up to $4.5 billion, while Swiss authorities say the number might be as high as $7 billion. One of the ways those involved hid the embezzled money was by using it to buy real estate and other assets, including art. Najib was eventually tried and convicted of money laundering, abuse of power, and breach of trust. The court <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-asia-53563065\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">sentenced him to 12 years in prison<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> in 2020. Meanwhile, the alleged mastermind of the money laundering scheme, Jho Low, escaped Malaysia and has been living as a fugitive, most likely in China.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">With art used to hide stolen money, authorities have confiscated art since the investigations began, with <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/2016\/07\/van-gogh-and-monet-paintings-seized-in-1mdb-corruption-investigation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Van Goghs<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> and <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/2017\/06\/doj-wants-a-picasso-given-to-leonardo-dicaprio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Basquiats<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> forfeited in the process. Low has recently agreed to forfeit roughly $100 million in assets to the Department of Justice. These assets include an apartment in Paris <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">as well as<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> several paintings, <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/art-world-archives\/u-s-recovers-monet-and-warhol-linked-to-fugitive-financier-jho-low-2504714\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">including one by Claude Monet and another by Andy Warhol<\/span><\/a> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">collectively<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> worth about $35 million. In this most recent development, though, the Justice Department <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">has <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">confiscated a Picasso drawing, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.christies.com\/img\/LotImages\/2014\/NYR\/2014_NYR_02847_0006_000(pablo_picasso_trois_femmes_nues_et_buste_dhomme101312).jpg?mode=max\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Trois femmes nues et buste d\u2019homme<\/span><\/em><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, from 1MDB\u2019s former general counsel <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jasmine<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Loo Ai Swan. The drawing, created in 1969, is worth approximately $1.27 million. Loo <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">was able to purchase<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> the drawing through Christie\u2019s in 2014 using embezzled money. Along with the Picasso, Loo also forfeited a Swiss bank account totaling approximately $500K. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> is just one small part of the $1.4 billion the United States has helped return to Malaysia in the scandal\u2019s wake. Despite these forfeitures, Low and Loo are not exempt from any criminal charges they face in Malaysia, the United States, and courts in other countries. Low currently faces federal charges in New York that include money laundering and trying to bribe government officials in Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates.
