The trail consists of <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/cdn-s-www.estrepublicain.fr\/images\/7CBCD852-E945-4067-BA18-9D6BECA0729C\/FB1200\/photo-1718808452.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">ten panels scattered around the village<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> that educate the public about the lives and works of the area\u2019s two most prominent artists: Jean-L\u00e9on G\u00e9r\u00f4me and Jules-Alexis Muenier. This trail was set up to coincide with G\u00e9r\u00f4me\u2019s two-hundredth birthday.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_54487\" style=\"width: 135px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/IMG_4003-rotated.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-54487\" class=\"wp-image-54487\" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/IMG_4003-rotated.jpg\" alt=\"a sign with the painting on it\" width=\"125\" height=\"167\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/IMG_4003-rotated.jpg 1512w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/IMG_4003-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/IMG_4003-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/IMG_4003-1152x1536.jpg 1152w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 125px) 100vw, 125px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-54487\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sign<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">G\u00e9r\u00f4me, the more well-known of the two, was born in Vesoul, the main town of the Haute-Sa\u00f4ne department. Muenier was also from Vesoul, going off to Paris in 1881 to study under G\u00e9r\u00f4me at the \u00c9cole des Beaux-Arts. At the time, G\u00e9r\u00f4me was one of Europe\u2019s most famous and popular academic painters, known for his <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/c\/c5\/Jean-Leon_Gerome_Pollice_Verso.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">historical paintings<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> and <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/3\/30\/Prayer_in_the_Mosque.jpg\/1280px-Prayer_in_the_Mosque.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Orientalist works<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. On top of his teaching position, G\u00e9r\u00f4me also had a studio in the western suburbs of Paris and a country house in Coulevon, two miles away from his birthplace. G\u00e9r\u00f4me, wishing to remain in Paris permanently, decided to sell the house in 1885 to his former student, Muenier. Muenier would remain in Coulevon for most of his artistic career, gaining success painting scenes of country life in the area. This painting is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/Jules_Alexis_Muenier_Coulevon_Looking_Toward_Vesoul.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Coulevon Looking Towards Vesoul<\/span><\/em><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, which Rehs Galleries bought and sold back in 1996. The painting\u2019s subject, a snowy country bridge, still stands today, with the painters\u2019 trail panel placed just to the side of it. The bridge spans a small river called Le B\u00e2tard, connecting Coulevon to Vesoul\u2019s Les R\u00eapes district. The panels were unveiled this past weekend, with representatives from local cultural and artistic associations present. Nicolas Muenier, the artist\u2019s grandson, was also in attendance.
