Located at the base of the hill of Montmartre in the 9th arrondissement, it <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">is dedicated<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> to the Romantic era, with its permanent collection featuring all sorts of artworks, documents, jewelry, and other memorabilia related to the era\u2019s painters, sculptors, composers, and literary figures. Since opening as a museum in 1982, it has hosted exhibitions dedicated to all aspects of the Romantic period, focusing on figures like Fr\u00e9d\u00e9ric Chopin and William Blake. Its current exhibit, which opened last month, is dedicated to the French painter Th\u00e9odore G\u00e9ricault to commemorate the two hundredth anniversary of his death. Though best known for his 1819 painting <\/span><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/1\/15\/JEAN_LOUIS_TH%C3%89ODORE_G%C3%89RICAULT_-_La_Balsa_de_la_Medusa_%28Museo_del_Louvre%2C_1818-19%29.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Raft of Medusa<\/span><\/a><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, G\u00e9ricault covered many subjects in his short but impactful career. One of his most prolific subjects was horses. As a student during the Napoleonic era, he often traveled to Versailles, where he spent time in the palace stables to make studies and drawings of the horses there. During his career, he painted horses <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/museevieromantique.paris.fr\/sites\/default\/files\/cinq_chevaux_vus_par_la_croupe_dans_une_ecurie_1811-1812_-_crop.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">on their own<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/7\/75\/Th%C3%A9odore_G%C3%A9ricault_-_Riderless_Racers_at_Rome_-_Walters_37189.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">at the races<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, and <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/7\/71\/G%C3%A9ricault_-_Equestrian_Portrait_of_Charles_V%2C_ca._1814%E2%80%931815.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">in their military capacity<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. The Mus\u00e9e de la Vie Romantique has centered its entire exhibition on G\u00e9ricault\u2019s horse paintings. However, the museum is receiving much criticism from the scholarly and curatorial community because not all the paintings are verified G\u00e9ricault paintings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Some of the ninety-seven paintings in <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">G\u00e9ricault\u2019s Horses<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> have widely accepted positive attributions. These include paintings on loan from the Louvre, the Rouen Mus\u00e9e des Beaux-Arts, and the Lille Palais des Beaux-Arts. However, the museum has included loans from private collections, making up about a third of the exhibition. None of these paintings <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">are included<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> in any of the three catalogue raisonn\u00e9s. Furthermore, <\/span><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theartnewspaper.com\/2024\/06\/19\/gericault-show-in-paris-sparks-authentication-controversy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Art Newspaper<\/span><\/a><\/em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theartnewspaper.com\/2024\/06\/19\/gericault-show-in-paris-sparks-authentication-controversy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> reports<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> that only half the works in the entire catalogue have the provenance and other documents required to positively and definitively attribute them to G\u00e9ricault. Philippe Grunchec, one of the foremost G\u00e9ricault experts, claims that the rest \u201care all copies, generally of low quality, inspired by the artist\u2019s paintings or engravings\u201d. The art dealer Jane Roberts stated they were just \u201ca bunch of unknown daubs\u201d, and French art journalist Didier Rykner called them \u201cmediocre\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">While this can be blamed on sloppy scholarship or overlooked details, there is evidence that the museum may have intentionally attributed works to G\u00e9ricault despite the lack of evidence. About six of the paintings in <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">G\u00e9ricault\u2019s Horses <\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">were all sold at auction while attributed to \u201cfollower of\u201d, \u201ccircle of\u201d, or \u201cin the manner of\u201d G\u00e9ricault rather than the artist himself. There are even works indisputably attributed to other artists that have gotten the same treatment. For example, <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latribunedelart.com\/IMG\/jpg\/cogniet-5.jpg?68585\/5528dfe5432d41d86079f1d0c3d45e09816b0d11265d3316e1a8498845e290b9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">a sketch by G\u00e9ricault\u2019s contemporary L\u00e9on Cogniet<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> on loan from the Mus\u00e9e des Beaux-Arts in Orl\u00e9ans is attributed to G\u00e9ricault in the exhibition catalogue. The Mus\u00e9e de la Vie Romantique has therefore altered the attribution to either elevate them to full-fledged positive attribution, or to change the attribution entirely.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Some museum directors and curators have strongly criticized <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">G\u00e9ricault\u2019s Horses <\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">for this, calling it \u201cshameful\u201d and \u201ca real disaster\u201d. Daniel Marchesseau, the museum\u2019s former director, penned a letter to the exhibition\u2019s organizers, director Ga\u00eblle Rio and art historian Bruno Chenique, saying that this mismanagement is \u201cdestroying the museum\u2019s reputation\u201d. <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/en\/culture\/article\/2024\/06\/09\/experts-squabble-over-gericault-exhibition-at-the-museum-of-romantic-life_6674268_30.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Writing for <\/span><\/a><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/en\/culture\/article\/2024\/06\/09\/experts-squabble-over-gericault-exhibition-at-the-museum-of-romantic-life_6674268_30.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Le Monde<\/span><\/a><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, Roxanne Azimi writes that studying and authenticating a work of art has <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">a good amount of<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> subjectivity, but that doesn\u2019t mean attributions should <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">be thrown around<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> carelessly. \u201cIn the absence of bibliographical references or tangible elements of provenance, however, caution prevails.\u201d A true G\u00e9ricault should languish in scholarly uncertainty because of genuine doubts rather than a student\u2019s or copyist\u2019s work <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">be hastily given<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> the full attribution of the master.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">While some museum officials have offered explanations, citing the museum\u2019s small size and limited resources, they seem to overlook a crucial point. The Mus\u00e9e de la Vie Romantique is not just any museum, it is a public institution funded by the city of Paris. It is also part of the Paris Mus\u00e9es, which oversees fourteen museums, including the Victor Hugo House, the Petit Palais, and the Paris Catacombs. These other museums may not be the Louvre, but they have, in the past, demonstrated their commitment to maintaining high standards. They have diligently prepared exhibitions and published scholarly works and catalogues that continue to be used as references among art historians today.
