Some of the highlights have included Archie Moore, an Aboriginal Australian artist,\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/20\/arts\/design\/venice-biennale-golden-lion-australia-archie-moore.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">winning the Golden Lion award<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0for the exhibition\u2019s best film; Israeli artists have\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/italy-israel-venice-biennale-hamas-hostages-b9e223df07eb88636ae3f470ab494bdb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">kept their country\u2019s pavilion closed<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0until a ceasefire can be reached in the ongoing Israel-Hamas war; and the city of Venice has implemented\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/venice-daytripper-tax-tourism-canals-e0a741e5e439fb8c027387534b086380\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">an entry fee for tourists visiting for the day<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. However, the most recent highlight was Pope Francis\u2019s visit to the Biennale on Sunday, April 28th, the first time ever that a pope has attended the exhibition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Pope visited the Vatican\u2019s pavilion,\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/artanddesign\/2024\/apr\/18\/insider-art-vatican-sets-up-biennale-pavilion-at-venice-womens-jail\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">located in a women\u2019s prison<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0on an island in the Venetian Lagoon. He toured the pavilion\u2019s exhibition, titled\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">With My Eyes<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, which focused on themes of human rights, human suffering, marginalization, repentance, and regeneration. The first thing one sees after getting off the water taxi is Maurizio Cattelan\u2019s black-and-white mural showing\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/IMG_4151.jpg?w=1250\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">a pair of dirty feet<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. The Vatican\u2019s culture minister, Cardinal Jos\u00e9 Tolentino de Mendon\u00e7a, compared the mural to the bare feet of saints\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.artchive.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/The-Crucifixion-of-Saint-Peter-Caravaggio-Michelangelo-Merisi-da-1600-1601-2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">depicted in paintings by Caravaggio<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, while others made similar comparisons to Andrea Mantenga\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><em><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/uploads7.wikiart.org\/images\/andrea-mantegna\/the-dead-christ-1478.jpg!Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Lamentation of Christ<\/span><\/a><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. However, dirty, bare feet also represent charity and love in the Catholic tradition. Bishops, including the Pope, participate in the ritual washing of feet every year on Holy Thursday to emulate Christ washing his disciples\u2019 feet. This comes from the gospel according to Saint John: \u201cIf I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another\u2019s feet. [\u2026] Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master\u201d. While previous popes have participated in this ritual, Pope Francis has stood out by not washing the feet of priests, as is normally done, but by performing the rite with lay people, including women and non-Christians. He made headlines one year after\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thetwo-way\/2013\/03\/28\/175601237\/in-ritual-pope-francis-washes-the-feet-of-young-inmates-women\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">visiting a prison<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0to wash and kiss the feet of inmates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">After exploring the exhibited works, Pope Francis shared his thoughts with the gathered artists and exhibition visitors. He spoke of the arts as a vital sanctuary for humanity. The Biennale\u2019s theme this year<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0\u2018Stranieri Ovunque\u2019, or \u2018Foreigners Everywhere\u2019, resonated with him deeply. He urged the artists,\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">saying,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0\u201cI implore you, artist friends, imagine cities that do not yet exist on the map; cities where no human being is considered a stranger. This is why when we say\u00a0\u2018Foreigners Everywhere\u2019,\u00a0we mean\u00a0\u2018Brothers Everywhere\u2019.\u201d He also had the opportunity to meet some of the prison\u2019s eighty inmates, who had contributed to the exhibition by composing poetry on the walls.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Following his visit to the Vatican pavilion, the pope stopped by the Basilica della Salute before saying mass in the Piazza San Marco to a crowd of 10,000. He commented on the city\u2019s beauty without ignoring its serious problems, most notably climate change and overtourism.
