This is especially true when it comes to governments with authoritarian streaks. And we are seeing it again with Russia concerning their current military endeavors in Ukraine. Everyone involved in the ongoing conflict understands that art and culture play an important role in the war&#8217;s trajectory and the world\u2019s perception of it. Now, Russia\u2019s government is trying to use museums to push its narrative of the conflict.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Over the past two years, Russia\u2019s armed forces have been responsible for <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/2022\/03\/ukraines-latest-loss\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the destruction and appropriation of Ukraine\u2019s culture and national heritage<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Cultural organizations have spread themselves thin trying to protect Ukrainian works of art, going as far as to\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/2022\/12\/cultural-defiance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">smuggle truckloads of works out of the country<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0for safekeeping in Western Europe, ranging from ancient artifacts to paintings by contemporary artists. Many Ukrainian museums in Russian-held territory\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.artforum.com\/news\/ukrainian-museum-collections-to-come-under-russian-control-as-annexation-looms-89380?tid=newsletter&amp;sid=afd-2022-10-06\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">now have new staff<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. These museums are now being repurposed to suit Russia\u2019s needs, including a new museum in Mariupol.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">When Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, the city of Mariupol came under siege. For nearly three months, the Ukrainian defenders kept the Russians at bay. About 90% of the city was destroyed in the process, while two-thirds of the population fled the area. Many of the city\u2019s museums and galleries were damaged or\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/art-news\/news\/kuindzhi-art-museum-destroyed-ukraine-war-1234622834\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">completely destroyed<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Even though the loss of the city to Russia was one of the major early defeats for Ukraine, the amount of time and effort it took for Russia to take the city and the subsequent humanitarian disaster cost Russia dearly on the world stage. However, Russia\u2019s government intends to view Mariupol\u2019s capture not as an invasion but as a liberation, which is the focus of the new museum in Mariupol. According to Russia\u2019s culture minister Olga Lyubimova, the museum will be dedicated to \u201cthe modern history of Donbass and Novorossiya\u201d. \u2018Novorossiya\u2019 literally means \u2018New Russia\u2019, and is a czarist term for southern Ukraine that has been dusted off and used by Putin and pro-Russia groups to refer to Russian-occupied territories in Ukraine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This new museum in Mariupol is just one of several museums the Russian government is establishing. A document drafted by Russia\u2019s culture ministry specifies what these museums should have on display, including children\u2019s toys stained with blood, ammunition provided by NATO, and knives decorated with swastikas and other Nazi symbols. This last addition serves as a reminder of the Kremlin\u2019s absurd claims that Ukraine\u2019s government\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2022\/feb\/25\/vladimir-putin-ukraine-attack-antisemitism-denazify\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">constitutes a neo-Nazi state<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0committing genocide of Russian-speaking people in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Russian authorities plan on opening the \u201cliberation\u201d museum this summer\u2026 that is unless they lose the city to Ukrainian forces before then.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Using museums to shape the public\u2019s perception of the past and the present is far from a new idea.
