This partnership will bring the creatures from the popular Japanese video game franchise into the vibrant world of the nineteenth-century Dutch painter. He first came into contact with Japanese <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ukiyo-e<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> prints while in Paris. At the time, Japan was starting to open up after nearly two centuries of strict isolationism. Van Gogh fell in love with the colors, the form, and the aesthetics of Japanese <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ukiyo-e<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, acquiring several hundred of them and even exhibiting them in the caf\u00e9s. Many European writers and artists credited Japan\u2019s isolationism as preserving a pure society, untouched by modern problems like disease, overpopulation, and industrialization. Therefore, artists like Van Gogh looked to Japan and its art more or less as a form of escapism or even a panacea for Europe\u2019s ails. Using his collection of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ukiyo-e<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Van Gogh created many copies and incorporated various elements into his own work. For example, in his 1887 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/5\/5f\/Van_Gogh_-_Portrait_of_Pere_Tanguy_1887-8.JPG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Portrait of P\u00e8re Tanguy<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he shows the art dealer sitting in front of a background of various Japanese works showing landscapes, flowers, and depictions of geishas. These include a depiction of Mount Fuji rising above Tanguy\u2019s head inspired by Utagawa Hiroshige\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/data.ukiyo-e.org\/mfa\/images\/sc148842.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sagami River<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Van Gogh even made his own copies of Hiroshige\u2019s work, most notably using the printmaker\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/a\/a8\/De_pruimenboomgaard_te_Kameido-Rijksmuseum_RP-P-1956-743.jpeg\/1024px-De_pruimenboomgaard_te_Kameido-Rijksmuseum_RP-P-1956-743.jpeg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plum Orchard in Kameido<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as the basis for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/8\/84\/Vincent_van_Gogh_-_Bloeiende_pruimenboomgaard-_naar_Hiroshige_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg\/1280px-Vincent_van_Gogh_-_Bloeiende_pruimenboomgaard-_naar_Hiroshige_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Japonaiserie: Flowering Plum Tree<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Some artist historians and commentators even suggest that this move to southern France may have been because of his interest in Japan, specifically his desire to leave the urban metropolis behind him in favor of nature, farmland, and greater creative independence. In a letter to his brother Theo sent not long after relocating to Arles, Van Gogh wrote, \u201cMy dear brother, you know, I feel I\u2019m in Japan\u201d. While living and working in Arles and Saint-R\u00e9my, Van Gogh Drew likely upon Japanese woodblock prints to create some of his most iconic works. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ukiyo-e<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8216;s<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> aesthetic began creeping into his paintings such as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Almond Blossom<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Such influence also appeared in his portraiture. In some of his works, like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ychef.files.bbci.co.uk\/1600x900\/p069rgbx.webp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">L\u2019Arl\u00e9sienne<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/9\/97\/Van_Gogh_-_Bildnis_Joseph_Roulin.jpeg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Portrait of Joseph Roulin<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and his many <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/7\/72\/Vincent_van_Gogh_-_Zonnebloemen_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg\/1024px-Vincent_van_Gogh_-_Zonnebloemen_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sunflower still-lifes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the subject appearing against a solid yellow-gold background seems <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/i.pinimg.com\/originals\/b9\/42\/c2\/b942c2dee8553d2edd6bc43d582b9182.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inspired by Japanese screen painting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In letters to his brother Theo, Van Gogh mentions his appreciation for the Japanese artist Katsushika Hokusai. He specifically describes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/images.metmuseum.org\/CRDImages\/as\/original\/DP130155.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Great Wave Off Kanagawa<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cHokusai makes you cry out the same thing \u2013 but in his case with his lines, his drawing, [\u2026] these waves are claws, the boat is caught in them, you can feel it.\u201d Some have suggested that the dynamism of the great wave may have inspired the great swirling pattern in the sky and stars in his masterwork <a href=\"https:\/\/i.pinimg.com\/originals\/6b\/24\/45\/6b2445cdcbac99131ef5ac586793173c.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Starry Night<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vincent van Gogh\u2019s Japanese influences have previously been the focus of a Van Gogh Museum exhibition. However, this new collaboration with Pok\u00e9mon seems less academic and more whimsical. The combination of Van Gogh\u2019s work with Pok\u00e9mon characters sees <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/duet-cdn.vox-cdn.com\/thumbor\/0x0:985x769\/1200x800\/filters:focal(493x385:494x386):format(webp)\/cdn.vox-cdn.com\/uploads\/chorus_asset\/file\/24963170\/Pokemon_x_Van_Gogh_Museum___Snorlax_Munchlax_inspired_by_The_Bedroom_png_jpgcopy.jpeg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Snorlax and Munchlax<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> passing the time in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vincentvangogh.org\/images\/paintings\/the-bedroom-at-arles.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Bedroom in Arles<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vangoghmuseumshop.com\/l\/en\/library\/download\/urn:uuid:a24a8151-12a9-45ec-bb23-ac0bf9506c27\/ssunflora.jpg?width=485\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sunflora<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> smiling among a sunflower still life, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vangoghmuseumshop.com\/l\/en\/library\/download\/urn:uuid:69bfe940-d01d-410e-b66c-f0072eeaf88a\/s-pikachu.jpg?width=485\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pikachu<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> posing for a portrait <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/iiif.micr.io\/pMtwg\/full\/1280,\/0\/default.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in Van Gogh\u2019s gray felt hat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Museum staff are also offering drawing lessons for younger visitors, teaching how to draw Pikachu.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, not everything has been sunshine and rainbow cards. The museum was completely overwhelmed when the Pok\u00e9mon exhibition first opened, but not everyone in the crowds was there to peruse the galleries. Many were there to go straight to the museum gift shop. Scalpers buying up the limited edition merchandise to sell out the back has become <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/23896251\/pokemon-van-gogh-pikachu-sold-out-scalping-promos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a serious problem for the museum and Pok\u00e9mon<\/a>. Both organizations issued statements, calling these visitors&#8217; behavior &#8220;disappointing&#8221; and &#8220;regrettable&#8221;.
