The Fisch Davidson collection of Baroque paintings fell just slightly short of expectations, but perhaps the following sale of Dutch Masterpieces from the Theiline Scheumann collection would fare better. While nothing matched the $23.5M achieved by Rubens\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Salome<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0earlier in the day, the Scheumann collection was noteworthy for its much smaller and far more intimate\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Young Woman Sealing a Letter by Candlelight<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0by Frans van Mieris the Elder. The painting is consistent with genre paintings of the Dutch Golden Age, which look at scenes from everyday life. These certainly stand in stark contrast with the more imposing, grandiose biblical and historical paintings of the Fisch Davisson Collection. Looking into a historical street scene can be interesting when the artist indicates where the painting is set. Finding an image of the location today and comparing it to the work scratches the kind of itch one gets when completing a puzzle or going through a <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Where\u2019s Waldo<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> book. You can see what has changed and what has remained locked in time. Of course, we\u2019re very familiar with this, given the many Blanchard and Cort\u00e8s Paris street scenes we\u2019ve seen come and go. But while there can be no such satisfaction in studying the Van der Heyden, the fact that the artist must know a city so well to create a believable fictional street scene in that city&#8217;s style takes a certain kind of skill. <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Imaginary View<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0reached its minimum estimate at $1M (or $1.26M w\/p). Finally, in third, Aert van der Neer\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Marshy Forest Landscape at Moonlight<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> fell just short of the $1M to $1.5M estimate range Sotheby&#8217;s specialists assigned it, reaching only at $950K (or $1.2M w\/p). This is surprising since, according to the house experts, this scene is one of the finest of Van der Neer\u2019s works to come to auction in recent years. <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Marshy Forest<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0is also very typical for Van der Neer, who enjoyed producing moonlight landscapes that wouldn\u2019t seem out of place among the nocturnal scenes of the German Romantics a couple of centuries later.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_46933\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/sothebys-md.brightspotcdn-1-1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-46933\" class=\"wp-image-46933 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/sothebys-md.brightspotcdn-1-1-300x203.jpg\" alt=\"A landscape showing a forest clearing in the moonlight. Sotheby\u2019s specialists predicted that all twelve lots would bring in at least $7.9M. However, the Scheumann collection ended up with a $6.5M total hammer. This can mainly be attributed to four of the total twelve lots (33%) going unsold, most notably Jacob Isaacksz. van Ruisdael\u2019s <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/sothebys-md.brightspotcdn.com\/dims4\/default\/6b6064c\/2147483647\/strip\/true\/crop\/2000x1549+0+0\/resize\/1024x793!\/quality\/90\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fsothebys-brightspot.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fmedia-desk%2Fwebnative%2Fimages%2F62%2F5a%2F1ebfa525477ebc8ef7d4cc8ce5f6%2F010n11166-9vd8j-t1-04.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A Wooded Landscape with a Quiet Stream<\/span><\/em><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, which specialists predicted to sell for at least $1M.
