Unfortunately, those expectations couldn\u2019t have been more wrong. It was an absolutely dismal affair and probably one of the worst sales I\u2019ve ever watched. Even at the beginning, it was clear that Bonhams had stirred up very little interest in the sale. That said, there were at least a few interesting highlights (w\/p = with buyer\u2019s premium).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">That day\u2019s top lot went to Henri Le Sidaner\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">La Porte dans la verdure<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, from the collection of Richard and Maxine Markell. The Markells were the owners of a Yonkers-based shoe distributor and prominent collectors of Chinese porcelain, whose estate also included Tiffany lamps and Impressionist paintings. This is the first time that the Sidaner has come up at auction, having been owned previously by Findlay Galleries in New York, as well as both Knoedler &amp; Co. and Galerie Georges Petit in Paris. Bonhams specialists estimated the painting to sell for between $120K and $180K, with the hammer coming down at $140K (or $176.8K w\/p).<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_46407\" style=\"width: 280px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/image-2-scaled.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-46407\" class=\"wp-image-46407\" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/image-2-300x249.jpg\" alt=\"A Paris street scene showing the sprawling, bustling Place de la Concorde on the banks of the River Seine. Like the Sidaner, this is the first time this work has come up at auction, having been kept in the same private collection in California since 1958. The painting captures an elevated view of the square from across the River Seine, with the Madeleine Church hiding just behind the central obelisk. Meanwhile, the Basilica of Sacr\u00e9 Coeur sits on top of Montmartre Hill in the distance. To get this view, Dufy would have had to climb onto the roof of the Palais Bourbon, where the National Assembly of France meets. The painting was expected to sell for no more than $50K, but with such a beautiful subject, I wasn\u2019t surprised when the work sold slightly above, at $80K (or $101.2K w\/p).<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_46408\" style=\"width: 278px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/image-scaled.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-46408\" class=\"wp-image-46408\" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/image-300x231.jpg\" alt=\"A painting featuring a dark-haired woman on the left sitting next to what looks like a small child on the right. The work is very typical of the artist, with a woman and child surrounded by lush vegetation; valued by Bonhams at $70K to $100K, it sold for $75K (or $94.9K w\/p). The other was by Fran\u00e7oise Gilot &#8211; she is perhaps best known for her ten-year relationship with Pablo Picasso, but was a great artist in her own right. At Bonhams, her 1978 abstract painting <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Magic Games<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0was valued at $80K to $100. While it failed to meet its estimate, selling for $75K, it was a great improvement from when it last sold at Christie\u2019s New York in 2010 for a mere $16K (or $20K w\/p).<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_46409\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/image-3-scaled.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-46409\" class=\"wp-image-46409 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/image-3-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"An abstract painting of different black, white, and pink circles with red and white arrows and other colorful shapes on a segmented blue background\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/image-3-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/image-3-820x1024.jpg 820w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/image-3-768x960.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/image-3-1229x1536.jpg 1229w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/image-3-1639x2048.jpg 1639w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-46409\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Magic Games<\/em> by Fran\u00e7oise Gilot<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The only surprise in terms of a higher-than-expected hammer price came a little late in the sale with an oil painting by the Italian-American surrealist Enrico Donati. The Message of the Sphinx is dark and mysterious, with patches of bright teal or gold. While only expected to sell for $12K at most, the hammer eventually came down at $55K (or $69.7K w\/p). Even still, this surprise wasn\u2019t enough to salvage the entire sale. From the beginning, the auction was so underwhelming. Thirty-eight of the total eighty-four lots (45%) went unsold that day. While that number alone doesn\u2019t always indicate failure, it\u2019s important to highlight which lots were bought in. It seems Bonhams did not do enough to drum up enough interest in the sale\u2019s highly-valued lots. Of the fifteen lots with a high estimate of $100K or higher, eleven went unsold, including Maurice de Vlaminck\u2019s <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/images2.bonhams.com\/image?src=Images\/live\/2022-11\/11\/25276913-1-8.jpg&amp;top=0.023809523809&amp;left=0.010000000000&amp;bottom=0.996031746031&amp;right=0.990000000000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Voiliers \u00e0 Chatou<\/span><\/em><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0(estimated to sell for $400K to $600K), Marc Chagall\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/images2.bonhams.com\/image?src=Images\/live\/2022-09\/02\/25246446-1-1.jpg&amp;top=0.033333333333&amp;left=0.041493775933&amp;bottom=0.970000000000&amp;right=0.950207468879\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Paysanne au visage vert<\/span><\/em><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0($350K to $550K), and Max Pechstein\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/images2.bonhams.com\/image?src=Images\/live\/2022-11\/07\/25258401-1-18.jpg&amp;top=0.023333333333&amp;left=0.028806584362&amp;bottom=0.960000000000&amp;right=0.975308641975\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Sonnenflecken<\/span><\/em><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> ($1M to $1.5M). Had there been more interest or these lots\u2019 reserves not been set so high, Bonhams might have been more successful.
