It was a relatively short affair, with only twenty-nine available lots in about an hour. The house specialists were more or less in the right area regarding estimates and the top lots. They accurately predicted that the top spot would go to <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Going to the Match<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> by Laurence Stephen Lowry. This moderately sized oil on canvas painting created in 1957 last sold at auction at Sotheby\u2019s London on December 1, 1999 for \u00a31.9M \/ $3.1M w\/p (or \u00a33.3M \/ $5.5M in 2022 &#8211; if adjusting for inflation). Since 2000, it has been on a long-term loan to the galleries at The Lowry in Salford, a small city within Greater Manchester. Christie\u2019s originally gave it a \u00a35M to \u00a38M estimate range, in which it fell at \u00a36.6M \/ $7.4M (or \u00a37.8M \/ $8.8M w\/p).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Christie\u2019s experts also had high hopes for the two Henry Moore sculptures featured on Wednesday. However,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artnet.com\/WebServices\/images\/ll00022llda6yJFgPNECfDrCWPTHRacFzaG\/henry-moore-working-model-for-seated-woman.jpg\"><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Working Model for Seated Woman<\/span><\/em><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, a bronze sculpture created in 1980 and estimated to sell for at least \u00a31.2M, was one of only two lots that went unsold that day. On the other hand, the other Moore sculpture did very well.\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Working Model for Two Pieces Reclining Figure: Points<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> is another bronze; the eighth casting of a series of ten created between 1969 and 1972. The first was Frank Auerbach\u2019s abstract portrait\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">J.Y.M. Seated<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, which slightly exceeded its original \u00a3900K high estimate. Those who follow the market will recognize that another one of Frank Auerbach\u2019s portraits of the same subject\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/2022\/10\/sothebys-london-contemporary-evening-sale\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">sold at Sotheby\u2019s London<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> last Friday, setting the artist\u2019s all-time auction record at \u00a34.7M. The second, which met its \u00a31M low estimate, was another oil on canvas painting by Laurence Stephen Lowry; this one a 1937 full-length portrait of an unknown man simply entitled <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.christies.com\/img\/LotImages\/2022\/CKS\/2022_CKS_21030_0012_000(laurence_stephen_lowry_ra_unemployed054433).jpg?mode=max\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Unemployed<\/span><\/em><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. And finally, something from this century&#8230; Bridget Riley\u2019s <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.christies.com\/img\/LotImages\/2017\/CKS\/2017_CKS_14443_0217_000(bridget_riley_painting_with_two_verticals_3114335).jpg?mode=max\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Painting with Two Verticals 3<\/span><\/em><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, is an oil on linen painting from 2005. This enormous work, measuring 26.25 x 104 inches, fell just short of its \u00a31.2M low estimate but did better than its last time across the block. Seated<\/em> by Frank Auerbach<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">While over a third of the sale\u2019s lots sold above their presale estimates, a small handful exponentially exceeded them. The back-to-back lots\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.christies.com\/img\/lotimages\/2022\/CKS\/2022_CKS_21030_0024_000(christopher_wood_crocuses_and_daffodils_in_pots054627).jpg?mode=max\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Crocuses and Daffodils in Pots<\/span><\/em><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0by Christopher Wood and\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.christies.com\/img\/LotImages\/2022\/CKS\/2022_CKS_21030_0025_000(paul_nash_the_bridge_romney_marsh054633).jpg?mode=max\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Bridge, Romney Marsh<\/span><\/em><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0by Paul Nash are rather simple, inoffensive oil paintings estimated to only go for \u00a3100K and \u00a3120K, respectively. Both works more than doubled their high estimates, selling for \u00a3230K \/ $257.7K (or \u00a3289.8K \/ $324.7K w\/p) and \u00a3280K \/ $313.7K (or \u00a3352.8K \/ $395.3K w\/p), respectively.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Overall, the sale did relatively well. Out of twenty-nine lots total, eight of them (28%) sold within their presale estimates, with another eight selling below and eleven (38%) selling above. Only two lots failed to sell, giving Christie\u2019s a 93% sold rate.
