Over two sales spanning seven hours total, 233 lots crossed the block, resulting in exceptional results for Phillips. It was expected to be the most valuable lot of the sale, an expectation it upheld when it reached its low estimate of \u00a3300K \/ $347K (or \u00a3378K \/ $437.3K w\/p). Coming up in second, as predicted by the house experts, was <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thrower (Grey)<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Banksy. The image of a masked rioter in the action of throwing a bouquet as if it\u2019s a rock or Molotov cocktail was originally created as a mural in 2007 when Banksy visited the West Bank. It has since become one of the British street artist\u2019s most recognizable and replicated images. This rendition created in 2019 features the subject divided up in a triptych of micron boards of varying sizes. It ended up falling within its \u00a3150K to \u00a3200K estimate when the hammer came down at \u00a3170K \/ $196.6K (or \u00a3214.2K \/ $247.8 w\/p). However, while Phillips was expecting big things from other Lichtenstein and Banksy works, one lot came up from behind and stole the spotlight. Created by Damien Hirst just last year, <em>The Virtues (<\/em>consisting of eight laminated gicl\u00e9e prints), sold for \u00a3120K \/ $138.8K (or \u00a3151.2K \/ $174.9 w\/p), nearly double its \u00a370K high estimate.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_45741\" style=\"width: 263px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/bykkx-01-scaled.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45741\" class=\"wp-image-45741\" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/bykkx-01-300x190.jpg\" alt=\"The Virtues series by Damien Hirst, sold at Phillips London\" width=\"253\" height=\"160\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/bykkx-01-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/bykkx-01-1024x649.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/bykkx-01-768x487.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/bykkx-01-1536x974.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/bykkx-01-2048x1298.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 253px) 100vw, 253px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-45741\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>The Virtues<\/em> series by Damien Hirst<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The evening sale was expected to bring in anywhere between \u00a31.4M and \u00a32.07M. With twenty-eight of the available sixty-two lots falling within estimate, and an additional twenty-six selling for over estimate, the evening sale fell comfortably on the high end at \u00a31.8M, while the specialists earned a 45% accuracy rate. Only a single lot failed to sell, giving the first sale a 98% sold rate.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_45742\" style=\"width: 234px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/394_001.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45742\" class=\"wp-image-45742\" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/394_001-300x234.jpg\" alt=\"Pop Shop I by Keith Haring, sold at Phillips London\" width=\"224\" height=\"175\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/394_001-300x234.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/394_001.jpg 605w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-45742\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Pop Shop I<\/em> by Keith Haring<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Day Edition sale was far longer, with a larger number of lower-priced works up for grabs. But while Phillips specialists were very good with predicting the top lots for the evening sale, the Day Edition was completely different. While the experts\u2019 estimates placed screenprints by Robert Motherwell and Damien Hirst at the very top, the stars of the day sale ended up being a small handful of lots that greatly exceeded expectations. In first place, coming in towards the end of the sale, was the Keith Haring screenprint <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pop Shop I. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Measuring only 12 x 15 inches, the relatively small 1987 print is unmistakably Haring, featuring the colorful humanoid outlines that have become the most identifiable hallmark of his work. What the house experts originally predicted would sell for no more than \u00a38K ended up in the sights of several bidders, who drove up the price to four times its high estimate at \u00a332K.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_45744\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/d7hftxdivxxvm.cloudfront.webp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-45744\" class=\"wp-image-45744\" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/d7hftxdivxxvm.cloudfront-300x196.webp\" alt=\"Bijou Gets Undressed 6 by Julian Opie, sold at Phillips London\" width=\"240\" height=\"157\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/d7hftxdivxxvm.cloudfront-300x196.webp 300w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/d7hftxdivxxvm.cloudfront-768x502.webp 768w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/d7hftxdivxxvm.cloudfront.webp 799w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-45744\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Bijou Gets Undressed 6<\/em> by Julian Opie<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then there were two prints, also towards the end of the sale, by the contemporary British artist Julian Opie. The prints, in back-to-back lots, are the sixth and seventh entries of the series known as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bijou Gets Undressed<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, created in 2004. Each print contains five renditions of the same minimalistic female figure in the process of removing her clothing. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bijou Gets Undressed 6<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bijou Gets Undressed 7<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sold for \u00a319K and \u00a318K, respectively, while each was only expected to sell for \u00a37K at most. And finally, another unexpected member of the sales top lots: the Joan Mir\u00f3 lithograph <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pierrot le Fou<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Created in 1964, the print is a good example of Mir\u00f3\u2019s tendency towards abstractionism in his later life. Perhaps this recognizable abstract style caused the print to tie for third at \u00a318K \/ $20.7K (\u00a322.68K \/ $26.1K w\/p), triple its \u00a36K high estimate. In total, the second sale did very well, exceeding the original \u00a3693.2K high total presale estimate and bringing in \u00a3807K \/ $928.5K. Out of one hundred seventy-one available lots, only ten failed to sell, giving the sale a 94% sold rate. The house specialists also did well, with fifty-six lots (33%) falling within estimate. Across the two sales, two hundred thirty-three lots crossed the block, with only eleven lots (5%) being bought in. 44% of the lots sold over estimate, while 36% sold within.
