You never can tell what\u2019s going to play well with audiences when in pre-production. But one of the ways writers and producers try to tap into mass appeal is to make a &#8220;bio-musical&#8221;. Telling real-life stories seems to resonate with people, whether it\u2019s the six wives of Henry VIII, or the Von Trapp family, or Annie Oakley. But sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn\u2019t.<\/span><span style=\"background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\" data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0So some are feeling either excitement or alarm since BTF Media announced\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" style=\"background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt; color: #4a6ee0;\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2022\/07\/frida-kahlo-broadway-musical-in-development-1235074160\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\" data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">a new musical<\/span><\/a><span style=\"background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\" data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> is in the works based on the life of Frida Kahlo.<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #0e101a; background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\"><span style=\"background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\" data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The new project, known by the working title\u00a0<\/span><em style=\"background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Frida: The Musical<\/em><span style=\"background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\" data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, already has ten songs by the Mexican composer Jaime Lozano and the American lyricist Neena Beber. Two songs were recently performed as part of the American Songbook series at New York\u2019s Lincoln Center. This is rather big news since many have attempted to adapt Kahlo\u2019s life for the stage. In 2014, producers put out a casting call for a Frida musical called\u00a0<\/span><em style=\"background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Tree of Hope<\/em><span style=\"background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\" data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, named after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fridakahlo.org\/images\/paintings\/tree-of-hope-remain-strong.jpg\">her painting of the same title<\/a><\/span><span style=\"background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\" data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. I can\u2019t find anything that shows that\u00a0<\/span><em style=\"background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Tree of Hope<\/em><span style=\"background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\" data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0amounted to anything. But this new attempt at bringing Kahlo\u2019s life to the stage is the first time the Kahlo estate has signed off on a musical adaptation. This may indicate that perhaps this may not be as kitschy as similar projects (I\u2019m looking at you,\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" style=\"background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt; color: #4a6ee0;\" href=\"https:\/\/broadwaynews.com\/2021\/11\/17\/review-diana-a-musical-so-bad-that-it-must-be-seen\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em style=\"color: #0e101a; background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\">Diana: The Musical<\/em><\/a><span style=\"background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\" data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">).<\/p>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color: #0e101a; background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\"><span style=\"background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 0pt;\" data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Producers state that the musical will be \u201ca full-throated celebration of Kahlo\u2019s joyous spirit of creativity and her unmatched gift for transforming physical and emotional pain into breathtaking beauty.\u201d The plot will cover her international trips to Paris and New York, her relationship with Diego Rivera, and her celebration of her native Mexico.
