But one of the characteristics many popular female artists have in common, whether Georgia O\u2019Keeffe or Yayoi Kusama, Lee Krasner or Frida Kahlo, is that many of them lived and worked in the modern era. However, the one who paved the way for all of them lived centuries ago. Artemisia Gentileschi is considered one of the greatest Italian artists of the seventeenth century. She is mainly known today for her scenes of women\u2019s empowerment from the Bible, classical mythology, and history.\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/b\/b7\/Judit_decapitando_a_Holofernes%2C_por_Artemisia_Gentileschi.jpg\/1200px-Judit_decapitando_a_Holofernes%2C_por_Artemisia_Gentileschi.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Judith<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">,\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/4\/4c\/David_and_Bathsheba_by_Artemisia_Gentileschi.jpg\/800px-David_and_Bathsheba_by_Artemisia_Gentileschi.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Bathsheba<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, and\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/3\/37\/Artemisia_Gentileschi_Cleopatra3.jpg\/1200px-Artemisia_Gentileschi_Cleopatra3.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Cleopatra<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0have all been given Gentileschi\u2019s shadow-cloaked treatment at one point or another. And now, Italian authorities have recently intercepted one of her paintings about to be shipped off to Austria for auction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Rather than showing a famous woman, real or fictional, the painting\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/cdn.sanity.io\/images\/cxgd3urn\/production\/eb56e837571e1f9e99d1b6d88b1a88bcb8c9381f-2048x1536.jpg?rect=0,153,2048,1229&amp;w=1200&amp;h=720&amp;q=85&amp;fit=crop&amp;auto=format\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Caritas Romana<\/span><\/em><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0has a more allegorical subject. Meaning\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Roman Charity<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0in Latin, the work shows the story of a woman breastfeeding her father after he is sentenced to death by starvation. While the story has been popular in the visual arts since the ancient period, the subject was particularly popular in the seventeenth century. In addition to Gentileschi, other Renaissance and Baroque masters like\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/thumb\/0\/0a\/Peter_Paul_Rubens_-_Cimon_en_Pero.jpg\/1280px-Peter_Paul_Rubens_-_Cimon_en_Pero.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Peter Paul Rubens<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/a\/a9\/Pieter_van_Mol_%28Attr.%29_-_Roman_Charity.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Pieter van Mol<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0have created their own renditions of the subject. For years, the Gentileschi\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Caritas Romana<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0was thought to have been created by one of her students or followers. However, Italy\u2019s Cultural Heritage Protection Unit has been investigating the work for around two years. The painting&#8217;s owners, it seems, planned on selling the work at an auction house in Vienna, trying to circumvent Italian cultural heritage and customs authorities by deliberately withholding relevant historical documentation.
