The Prince\u2019s Palace, or the\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Palais Princier<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, has belonged to the Grimaldi family for over seven hundred years. The family has also held the title Prince of Monaco for as long as they\u2019ve owned the palace. Initially built by the Genoese in the late twelfth century as a fortress, the palace has expanded with new wings and other extensions added during the Renaissance and Baroque periods. While still a functioning royal residence, the Prince\u2019s Palace is mainly a tourist attraction. The state rooms are open to the public during summer, while the main courtyard often hosts concerts and other events. But now, after an extensive, eight-year restoration, past visitors can see some of the palace\u2019s treasures for the first time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">During the project, restorers uncovered several Renaissance frescoes. Based on the style and the use of lime-based plaster, specialists believe they\u2019re likely the work of a Genoese painter from around the sixteenth century. The frescoes depict scenes from classical mythology, like the\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/app\/news-upload\/2022\/07\/Galerie-dHercule-Lunette-Les-boeufs-de-Geryon-%C2%A9-Photo-Mae%CC%88l-Voyer-Gadin-Palais-princier-de-Monaco-1024x576.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">twelve labors of Hercules<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, which were painted over in the nineteenth century. Over six hundred square meters of frescoes have been uncovered throughout the palace:\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.monaco-tribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/galerie-dhercule-restauration-des-voutes-%C2%A9-photo-conservation-restauration-fresques-palais-princier-de-monaco-compressed-1024x683.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">around the courtyard<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, the\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.monaco-tribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/chambre-deurope-plafond-%C2%A9-photo-mael-voyer-gadin-palais-princier-de-monaco-3-compressed-1024x1024.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">ceilings of the many salons<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, and even the\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.monaco-tribune.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/salle-du-trone-%C2%A9-geoffroy-moufflet-archives-du-palais-de-monaco-1-compressed-1024x683.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">throne room<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. In recent years, Prince Albert II has tried to recover many of the princely family\u2019s collections that were lost over the years, mainly during the Napoleonic Wars when the palace was looted several times. Today, visitors can view works by Jacopo Bassano, Orazio de Ferrari, and Philippe de Champaigne that once belonged to the Grimaldi family. So now, these newly reacquired treasures can stand alongside the treasures hiding under some paint.
