Sotheby&#8217;s specialists were very good at predicting the top lots, with Pablo Picasso&#8217;s <em>Nus masculins (Les trois \u00e2ges de l&#8217;homme)<\/em>\u00a0taking the top spot in terms of both the pre-sale estimates and the hammer prices. A moderately-sized oil on canvas work from 1942, it shows three nude male figures meant to represent, as the title suggests, the three ages of a man: an adolescent playing some sort of flute, a bearded young man with a horned mask, and a heavyset older man laying on the floor. Specialists estimated it would sell for \u20ac2.5M to \u20ac3.2M, selling just beyond at \u20ac3.4M \/ $3.68M (or \u20ac4.14M \/ $4.48M w\/p).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_44784\" style=\"width: 207px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/PicabiaTarin.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44784\" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/PicabiaTarin-239x300.jpg\" alt=\"A 1929 surrealist work by Francis Picabia of siskin birds overlapped with the outlines of human faces, sold at Sotheby's\" width=\"197\" height=\"247\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-44784\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tarin by Francis Picabia<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The specialists were similarly accurate about some of the other top lots. Francis Picabia&#8217;s painting entitled\u00a0<em>Tarin\u00a0<\/em>was also highly-valued, being a brilliant arrangement of human outlines among a group of siskin birds on leafy branches. The work is very typical of Picabia&#8217;s work in the late 1920s. Having previously experimented with cubism and Dada, Picabia was moving into surrealism during this time, marked by the figure outlines over top of simple still-lifes or portraits.\u00a0<em>Tarin<\/em>\u00a0was estimated to sell for anywhere between \u20ac1.9M and \u20ac2.4M, selling on the higher end at \u20ac2.35M \/ $2.55M (or \u20ac2.88M \/ $3.12M w\/p).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_44785\" style=\"width: 188px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/PicassoTeteDHomme.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44785\" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/PicassoTeteDHomme-241x300.jpg\" alt=\"A Picasso portrait sold at Sotheby's\" width=\"178\" height=\"222\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-44785\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">T\u00eate D&#8217;Homme by Pablo Picasso<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Sotheby&#8217;s experts originally expected Marc Chagall&#8217;s 1974 oil-and-ink work\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sothebys-md.brightspotcdn.com\/dims4\/default\/7eb8dcf\/2147483647\/strip\/true\/crop\/1603x2000+0+0\/resize\/385x480!\/quality\/90\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fsothebys-brightspot.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fmedia-desk%2F5f%2F7c%2Fe808bfc14a369ab3d9b20afe6927%2F1230pf2246-7y288-02-a.jpg\"><em>Le Clown multicolore<\/em><\/a>\u00a0to reach third place, giving it a \u20ac1.6M to \u20ac2M estimate. While it did reach \u20ac1.35M \/ $1.46M (or \u20ac1.6685M \/ $1.8M w\/p), it was surpassed by \u20ac50K by one of the other Picasso works on sale.\u00a0<em>T\u00eate D&#8217;Homme<\/em>, a small portrait from 1965, hit its low estimate when it sold for \u20ac1.4M \/ $1.52M (or \u20ac1.73M \/ $1.87M w\/p). The 1939 still-life\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/Louis_Valtat_Vase_de_fleurs.html\">Vase de fleurs<\/a> au coquelicot, <\/em>the\u00a0third and final Picasso work at the sale, surprised everyone when the hammer came down at \u20ac820K \/ $885.6K (or \u20ac1.03M \/ $1.11 w\/p), coming close to tripling the \u20ac300K high estimate. Speaking of surprises, the sale featured a string of <a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/bio\/bernard-buffet\/\">Bernard Buffet<\/a> works. Nearly all ten Buffet works either hit their estimates or exceeded them, with only one remaining unsold. One of them, an example from Buffet&#8217;s ink-on-paper series <em>Le Bestiaire<\/em>, caught my attention. <a href=\"https:\/\/sothebys-md.brightspotcdn.com\/dims4\/default\/075c949\/2147483647\/strip\/true\/crop\/2000x1533+0+0\/resize\/385x295!\/quality\/90\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fsothebys-brightspot.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fmedia-desk%2F45%2Fcc%2F12fc85994917b5741f5b12db21a8%2Fpf2246-c7d2g-01.jpg\">A drawing of a gnarly-looking bulldog<\/a> with dark eyes that was only estimated to sell for \u20ac20K maximum, sold for \u20ac55K \/ $59.3K (or \u20ac69.3K \/ $74.8K w\/p). It only confirms my original hypothesis that I made following Bonhams&#8217; 19th Century sale <a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/2022\/04\/bonhams-19th-century-british-impressionism-sale\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">earlier this month<\/a>: &#8220;similar to the Internet, if something has a couple of cute dogs, it&#8217;s bound to get more attention than expected.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It was a very good day for Sotheby&#8217;s as 41% of the available lots sold above estimate, while only four lots (12%) went unsold.
