They had the second half of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/2022\/03\/sothebys-schmit-collection-part-ii\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Robert and Nadine Schmit collection<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on Thursday. The following day, they held their modern and impressionist online sale, full of great surprises (w\/p = with buyer\u2019s premium). The top spot went to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">En revenant des Champs<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Gustave van de Woestyne. The man and woman looking over their shoulders at the viewer, put onto canvas by a relatively obscure Belgian expressionist, sold for \u20ac240K \/ $263.7K (or \u20ac302.4K \/ $332.3K w\/p). While it had the highest hammer price of the sale, it sold for just short of its minimum pre-sale estimate of \u20ac250K.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_44577\" style=\"width: 167px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/sothebys-md.brightspotcdn-3.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44577\" class=\"wp-image-44577 \" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/sothebys-md.brightspotcdn-3-219x300.jpg\" alt=\"A painting by Jean Metzinger sold at Sotheby's Paris showing a figurehead of a bow of a ship with a nude female torse and two horse figures\" width=\"157\" height=\"215\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/sothebys-md.brightspotcdn-3-219x300.jpg 219w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/sothebys-md.brightspotcdn-3-746x1024.jpg 746w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/sothebys-md.brightspotcdn-3-768x1054.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/sothebys-md.brightspotcdn-3.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 157px) 100vw, 157px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-44577\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Metzinger&#8217;s <em>Figure et chevaux de proue<\/em><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some other high price tags included that of Jean <\/span>Metzinger&#8217;s <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Figure et chevaux de proue<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The large oil on canvas painting was stunning, showing the nude torso of a woman decorating the bow of a ship. Gold completely envelops her, including the gold detailing of the ship\u2019s bow, a golden starfish resting on her hand, and something draped over her arms and around her back resembling a golden, scaled boa scarf. Her hair is also gold, which I originally mistook for golden laurels sitting atop her head. Despite the title saying horses accompany her, the two equine figures flanking her are actually <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/c8.alamy.com\/comp\/DDRY1J\/poseidon-latin-neptune-greek-god-of-the-water-and-the-sea-in-the-chariot-DDRY1J.jpg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hippocampi<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a half-horse half-fish combination from Greek mythology. This is a quite fitting continuation of the nautical theme. All three figures are completely white, making them almost seem like they\u2019re sculpted from marble on the fa\u00e7ade of a Greek temple or an Art Deco skyscraper. Metzinger\u2019s painting eventually sold for \u20ac190K \/ $208.7K (or \u20ac239.4K \/ $263K w\/p).<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_44585\" style=\"width: 183px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/sothebys-md.brightspotcdn-5.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44585\" class=\" wp-image-44585\" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/sothebys-md.brightspotcdn-5-232x300.jpg\" alt=\"An abstract painting of two figures dancing above a river by Marc Chagall and sold at Sotheby's Paris\" width=\"173\" height=\"223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/sothebys-md.brightspotcdn-5-232x300.jpg 232w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/sothebys-md.brightspotcdn-5-793x1024.jpg 793w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/sothebys-md.brightspotcdn-5-768x992.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/sothebys-md.brightspotcdn-5.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 173px) 100vw, 173px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-44585\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>La Danse<\/em> by Marc Chagall<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Third place was actually a tie between a sculpture and a painting. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sothebys-md.brightspotcdn.com\/dims4\/default\/389a2d6\/2147483647\/strip\/true\/crop\/2000x1826+0+0\/resize\/800x730!\/quality\/90\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fsothebys-brightspot.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fmedia-desk%2F8d%2F32%2F21c1f3bb449aabf0b935dbbffa01%2Fpf2226-c659r-01.jpg\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T\u00eate, oiseau<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Joan Mir\u00f3 sold for \u20ac150K \/ $164.7K (or \u20ac189K \/ $207.6K w\/p), while a Marc Chagall painting called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La Danse<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> reached the same price. Both are very typical works for their respective artists. The Mir\u00f3 bronze was spotted with patches of green oxidation, most noticeable where the artist made a very simplistic frowning face right in the middle of the rough, round sculpture. The Chagall work, done with gouache and pencil on paper, shows a pair of figures dancing, almost floating over a river, with several smaller figures surrounding the Eiffel tower off to the side. It may not be as striking or colorful as some other works by the artist of the same name, but it\u2019s still exemplary of the fantasy, or rather the dream sequence snapshots, that Chagall often made the subject of his works.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_44579\" style=\"width: 229px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/sothebys-md.brightspotcdn-4.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44579\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-44579\" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/sothebys-md.brightspotcdn-4-219x300.jpg\" alt=\"A surrealist painting by Jane Graverol sold at Sotheby's Paris\" width=\"219\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/sothebys-md.brightspotcdn-4-219x300.jpg 219w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/sothebys-md.brightspotcdn-4-749x1024.jpg 749w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/sothebys-md.brightspotcdn-4-768x1050.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/sothebys-md.brightspotcdn-4.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 219px) 100vw, 219px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-44579\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>La d\u00e9esse raison<\/em> by Jane Graverol<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There were also a few surprises along the way, where the Sotheby\u2019s specialists dramatically underestimated how much some buyers would be willing to drop that day. In the middle of the sale, works by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sothebys-md.brightspotcdn.com\/dims4\/default\/be869ee\/2147483647\/strip\/true\/crop\/1282x1036+0+0\/resize\/800x646!\/quality\/90\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fsothebys-brightspot.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fmedia-desk%2F4a%2Fa0%2Fae55fbcd48a7b2f84cf3b7f9d981%2Fpf2226-c457r-01.jpg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Berthe Morisot<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (est. \u20ac12K to \u20ac18K; \u20ac55K \/ $60.4K hammer, or \u20ac69.3K \/ $76.1K w\/p) and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sothebys-md.brightspotcdn.com\/dims4\/default\/19cf6c3\/2147483647\/strip\/true\/crop\/2000x1318+0+0\/resize\/800x527!\/quality\/90\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fsothebys-brightspot.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fmedia-desk%2F73%2F4e%2F29730c184dd39a30ebd83d569899%2Fpf2226-c3g3t-01.jpg\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paul S\u00e9rusier<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (est. \u20ac1K to \u20ac1.5K; \u20ac5K \/ $5.5K hammer, or \u20ac6.3K \/ $6.9K w\/p) reached triple their high estimates. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the real shock came a little while later when Jane Graverol\u2019s 1959 oil-on-board painting <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La d\u00e9esse raison<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> went across the block. While only estimated to sell for anywhere between \u20ac2.6K and \u20ac3.5K, the work by the Belgian surrealist climbed up and up until it reached a hammer price of \u20ac38K \/ $41.8K (or \u20ac47.8K \/ $52.6K w\/p), nearly eleven times the high estimate. This was also an auction record for Jane Graverol. Her highest-valued work before <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La d\u00e9esse raison<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was her 1954 oil-on-board work <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/64.media.tumblr.com\/41971753069f2e4c5e1d0ecc61a9e941\/feffda878598a903-91\/s1280x1920\/c647226077330079e3e0ffcb7afcadae77a5bfbe.jpg\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La chair de v\u00e9rit\u00e9<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which similarly blew away its meager \u00a33K to \u00a35K estimate at a 2018 Sotheby\u2019s sale with a \u00a318K \/ $25.7K hammer price.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In total, ninety-three of the one hundred forty-one lots, or about two-thirds, hit or exceeded their estimates. Thirty-five lots were either bought in or withdrawn. The lots that did sell took in \u20ac3.2M \/ $3.5M, or a little over \u20ac4M \/ $4.5M w\/p. This falls nicely into the \u20ac2.9M to \u20ac4.1M (or $3.2M to $4.5M) pre-sale estimate Sotheby\u2019s specialists gave.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Sotheby\u2019s Paris had remarkable back-to-back days at the end of March.
