(w\/p = with buyer&#8217;s premium) The first half was already featured at a sale back in early December. Robert Schmit was a prominent art collector who operated his own gallery on the rue Saint-Honor\u00e9 in Paris. Starting in the 1960s, he and his wife Nadine became known as some of the top collectors of nineteenth-century French paintings, especially works by <a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/bio\/eug%C3%A8ne-louis-boudin\/\">Eug\u00e8ne Boudin<\/a> and Gustave Courbet. So it wasn&#8217;t very surprising when Courbet&#8217;s <em>La Pauvresse de village<\/em>\u00a0took the top spot at the sale. A peasant woman hauls a bundle of kindling on her back, trudging through the snow accompanied by her young daughter and a goat that she&#8217;s pulling on a rope. Though a later work from 1866, the painting is more typical of Courbet&#8217;s earlier social realist works like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Stone_Breakers#\/media\/File:Gustave_Courbet_-_The_Stonebreakers_-_WGA05457.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Stone Breakers<\/em><\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Wheat_Sifters#\/media\/File:Gustave_Courbet_014.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Wheat Sifters<\/em><\/a>. It exceeded its original million-euro estimate, selling for \u20ac1.4M\/$1.54M (or \u20ac1.73M\/$1.9M w\/p).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_44558\" style=\"width: 318px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/pf2206-bkxrj-01.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-44558\" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/pf2206-bkxrj-01-300x140.jpg\" alt=\"A watercolor and gouache landscape of Balbins by Johan Barthold Jongkind\" width=\"308\" height=\"144\" data-uw-rm-alt-original=\"A watercolor and gouache landscape of Balbins by Johan Barthold Jongkind\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-44558\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Col de Balbins, Ornacieux<\/em> by <a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/bio\/johan-barthold-jongkind\/\">Johan Barthold Jongkind<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>The other top lots featured were\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sothebys-md.brightspotcdn.com\/dims4\/default\/50a6b10\/2147483647\/strip\/true\/crop\/2000x1645+0+0\/resize\/800x658!\/quality\/90\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fsothebys-brightspot.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fmedia-desk%2F50%2Fed%2F4ba963b34fbfabb1d61a86b3a082%2Fpf2206-bmhdz-01.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Tournant du Loing<\/em><\/a>\u00a0by <a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/bio\/alfred-sisley\/\">Alfred Sisley<\/a>, a landscape showing a tributary of the Seine which sold for \u20ac400K\/$440K (or \u20ac504K\/$554K w\/p). There was also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latribunedelart.com\/IMG\/png\/boudin_.png?53243\/71babe3c49edd366808d89c57aba1d9f4ea58c51\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a landscape of Brest harbor<\/a>\u00a0by Eug\u00e8ne Boudin with disembarking sailors in the foreground, which went for \u20ac290K\/$319K (or \u20ac365.4K\/$401.9K w\/p). There were also one or two surprises along the way. A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sothebys-md.brightspotcdn.com\/dims4\/default\/276cc48\/2147483647\/strip\/true\/crop\/1661x2000+0+0\/resize\/800x963!\/quality\/90\/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fsothebys-brightspot.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fmedia-desk%2F46%2F31%2F107c9e1a4241b193cd99f3f9abde%2Fpf2206-bkxpm-01.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">portrait by Eug\u00e8ne Delacroix<\/a> hit \u20ac90K\/$99K (or \u20ac113.4K\/$124.7K w\/p), tripling its original estimate after someone put in a \u20ac70K advance bid. A little later on, a double-sided watercolor and gouache work by <a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/bio\/johan-barthold-jongkind\/\">Johan Barthold Jongkind<\/a> shattered its original estimate by selling for \u20ac9K, which was six times what Sotheby&#8217;s specialists said it would go for. One side shows <a href=\"https:\/\/sothebys-md.brightspotcdn.com\/df\/4b\/3c2f1a2e464b9a9ba1ddd0ac125b\/pf2206-bkxrj-01.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a verdant landscape<\/a>, indicated by the artist to be in Balbins, halfway between Lyon and Grenoble. The other side seems to be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/sothebys-md.brightspotcdn.com\/76\/cc\/1fa5c44a446ab9ccc10001d81a29\/pf2206-bkxrj-03.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">studies of farmers<\/a>\u00a0with carts full of hay, which Jongkind wrote were the residents of the town of C\u00f4te-Saint-Andr\u00e9, right next to Balbins.<\/p>\n<p>Fifty-four of the seventy-eight lots offered, over two-thirds, hit or beat their estimates. Sotheby&#8217;s specialists correctly estimated the total sale to bring in anywhere between \u20ac2.7M and \u20ac4M.
