Max Liebermann<\/p><\/div>\n

Sotheby\u2019s had another tough go on October 7th<\/sup> with their lower to mid-level Impressionist and Modern works of art.\u00a0 While there were a few nice paintings in the mix, there was nothing that made me say \u2013 “I gotta have that!”<\/p>\n

Marc Chagall<\/p><\/div>\n

The top performer was a small (9.625 x 13.375 inch) sketch by German artist Max Liebermann, titled Spielende Kinder am Strand (Children playing on the beach)<\/em>.\u00a0 The work, which appears to have been fresh to the market, was expected to sell in the \u00a350-70K range and hammered at \u00a3130K\/$177K (\u00a3164K\/$223K w\/p). From the quick bit of research I did, it seems this is the highest price achieved for a small study; the previous high of $170K was set back in 2015. Next came Marc Chagall\u2019s Nature morte devant la\u00a0fen\u00eatre<\/em> (a 1953 brush and ink and wash on paper).\u00a0 The work was expected to bring \u00a3100-150K and hammered at \u00a3110K\/$150K (\u00a3138.6K\/$186K w\/p). And in the third slot was Bernard Buffet\u2019s 1956 Nature morte au r\u00e9veil<\/em>.\u00a0 I do like Buffet\u2019s work, but sometimes they are a little too creepy for me.\u00a0 Expected to sell in the \u00a345-65K range, this one eclipsed the upper end when it sold for \u00a385K\/$116K (\u00a3107k\/$146K w\/p). Filling in the top five were Lynn Chadwick\u2019s sculpture Third girl sitting on bench<\/em> at \u00a370K\/$95K (\u00a388.2K\/$120K w\/p \u2013 est. \u00a370-100K), and Franti\u0161ek Kupka\u2019s Composition \u2013 Lueurs<\/em>, a small pastel on paper, that brought \u00a365K\/$88.5K (\u00a381.9K\/$111.6K w\/p).<\/p>\n

Other good performers were Gustav Klimt\u2019s Auf dem Bauch liegender Halbakt nach rechts (Semi-Nude Lying on her Stomach turned to the Right)<\/em> at \u00a332K\/$43.5 (\u00a340.3K\/$55K w\/p \u2013 est. \u00a310-15K), Henri Hayden\u2019s Paysage<\/em> which brought \u00a314K\/$19K (\u00a317.6K\/$24K w\/p \u2013 est. \u00a33-5K), and Armand Guillaumin\u2019s Le Ravin de la folie, vue de Chateau Crozant<\/em> which hammered at \u00a350K\/$68K (\u00a363K\/$85.7K w\/p \u2013 est. \u00a315-20K).\u00a0 Some of the works that could not find buyers included Utrillo\u2019s Eglise de Beaulieu<\/em> (est. \u00a360-80K), Boudin\u2019s Deauville, le basin<\/em> (est. \u00a350-70K), Degas\u2019 Jockey\u2019s<\/em> (\u00a350-70K), Kisling\u2019s Le parc<\/em> (est. \u00a350-70K), and Marquet\u2019s Le Paquebot<\/em> (\u00a340-60K).<\/p>\n

By the end of the sale, 97 lots were offered and 66 sold (a sell-through rate of 68%). The sale totaled \u00a31.34M\/$1.83M hammer (\u00a31.69M\/$2.3M w\/p), while the presale estimate range was \u00a31.65-2.5M, so they needed the buyer\u2019s premium to make just squeak by the low end.\u00a0 Of the 97 lots, 17 were below, 32 within, and 18 above their estimate range.\u00a0 This gave them an accuracy rate of 33% \u2026 much better than the American sale.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
