Here, Harald Sohlberg\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Winter Night in the Mountains<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> (a watercolor) took the top spot at \u00a31.1M\/$1.5M (\u00a31.35M\/$1.86M w\/p \u2013 est. \u00a3800-1.2M). This painting was a very nice example and had descended in the artist\u2019s family \u2013 so it was fresh! Another fresh work grabbed the second spot &#8211; Eugen von Blaas\u2019 <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">No Love Without Envy<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. This painting has been in the same family\u2019s collection since 1952; it carried a \u00a3150-250K estimate and sold for \u00a3350K\/$484K (\u00a3439K\/$606K w\/p). And the third-place finisher was Dawson\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The \u2018Shun Lee\u2019 in Pacific Seas<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, which was last on the market in 1962 (oh look, another fresh one that did well), and brought \u00a3170K\/$235K (\u00a3214K\/$296K w\/p \u2013 est. \u00a380-120K). Rounding out the top five were Monsted\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A Woodland Stream on a Summer Day<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0at \u00a3120K\/$166K (\u00a3151K\/$209K \u2013 est. \u00a360-80K), and Frederic, Lord Leighton\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Head of a Girl<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0at \u00a3110K\/$152K (\u00a3139K\/$191K w\/p \u2013 est. \u00a360-80K).<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_42271\" style=\"width: 226px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/dawson.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42271\" class=\" wp-image-42271\" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/dawson-300x237.jpg\" alt=\"two ships passing each other\" width=\"216\" height=\"171\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/dawson-300x237.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/dawson-768x607.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/dawson.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 216px) 100vw, 216px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-42271\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dawson<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">While I could go on about other works that did ok and those that did not (of the top ten lots with the highest estimates, only three sold), I believe that the numbers speak for themselves. The sale consisted of 115 lots. Of those, 60 found buyers, and 55 are going back to their owners, giving them a sell-through rate of just 52%. The total take was \u00a33.05M\/$4.2M (\u00a33.8M\/$5.25M w\/p), while the presale estimate range was \u00a35-7.4M, so even with the buyer\u2019s premium, they fell far short. Of the 60 sold works, 6 were below, 33 within, and 21 above their estimates, this generated an accuracy rate of 28.7% (which is not all that bad), but on the flip side, when almost half the sale is bought-in, that is not very good.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">While studying the 33 works that sold within their estimate range, an interesting statistic emerged. Twenty-three of them sold at the bottom of their range, meaning that most likely, those paintings sold on the reserve to just one bidder.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Next up \u2026 Christie\u2019s British and European sale\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Auction rooms need to start paying attention to what works and what does not.
