Alfred Munnings The Vagabonds<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">This month, Christie&#8217;s presented a small sale (30 works) featuring sporting and Irish art from the collection of B.J. Eastwood. Eastwood, who passes away last year, acquired most of the works decades ago. This was a perfect storm; a collection of great quality works, in good condition, that were were fresh-to-the-market&#8230; something I have always said is essential for a successful event. Alfred Munnings The Coming Storm<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Taking the top spot was Sir Alfred Munning&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Vagabonds<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. This large work (50 x 80 inches) carried a \u00a3700k-1M estimate and sold for \u00a31.94M\/$2.68M. Eastwood acquired the painting in 1990 for \u00a3187K\/$307K, so I am sure his estate was pleased \u2013 but that is just the beginning. Sir Munnings also captured the second and third spots when <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Coming Storm<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0(est. \u00a3600-800K) and\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">John J. Moubray, Master of Foxhounds, dismounted with his wife and two mounted figures with the Bedale hounds in a landscape<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> (est. \u00a3400-600K) each made \u00a31.2M\/$1.6M. He purchased <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Coming Storm<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0in 1989 for \u00a3352K\/$558K, and the other was bought in 1986 (I am still trying to determine the purchase price). Rounding out the top five were two Irish works; Jack Butler Yeats&#8217;\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">A Summer Day<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0(est. \u00a3500-800K), and a beautiful works by Sir John Lavery,\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Terrace, Cap d&#8217;Ail<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> (est. \u00a3400-600K); each brought \u00a31.16M\/$1.6M.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_42255\" style=\"width: 275px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/John-J.-Moubray-Master-of-Foxhounds-dismounted-with-his-wife-and-two-mounted-figures-with-the-Bedale-hounds-in-a-landscape.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-42255\" class=\"size-full wp-image-42255\" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/John-J.-Moubray-Master-of-Foxhounds-dismounted-with-his-wife-and-two-mounted-figures-with-the-Bedale-hounds-in-a-landscape.jpg\" alt=\"horses, hunters, and fox hounds\" width=\"265\" height=\"190\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-42255\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sir. Alfred Munnings<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">There were other strong results, among them were John Fergus O&#8217;Hea&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Punchestown Races, 1868<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0at \u00a3695K\/$960K (est. \u00a3100-150K), Paul Henry&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Mountains and Lake, Connemara<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> at \u00a3623K\/$860K (est. \u00a3120-180K \u2013 it was purchased in 1990 for \u00a364K\/$103K), Munnings&#8217; <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Point-to-Point<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> \u2013 \u00a3413K\/$570K (est. \u00a330-50K), William Orpen&#8217;s <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Portrait of Lady Evelyn Herbert<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> \u2013 \u00a3313K\/$432K (est. \u00a380-120K), and James Pollard&#8217;s <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The London-Edinburgh Royal Mail coach setting a brisk pace on a summer day<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0\u2013 \u00a3106K\/$147K (est. \u00a325-35K).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">By the end of the sale, 28 of the 30 works found buyers, giving them a sell-through rate of over 93% (excellent).
