Marie Vassilieff<\/p><\/div>\n

On April 14, Christie\u2019s, Paris, presented their Oeuvres modernes sur papier \/ Art Impressionniste et Moderne sale that included a wide range of work from the 19th<\/sup> and 20th<\/sup> centuries.\u00a0 While there was very little that interested us, it is obvious many others were very interested – the results for several works really surprised me. (w\/p = with the buyer\u2019s premium).<\/p>\n

Robert Delaunay<\/p><\/div>\n

The top lot in this sale was a Cubistic work by the Russian born Marie Vassileff\u2019s titled Nu<\/em>. The painting carried a \u20ac250-350K estimate and sold for \u20ac550K\/$659K (\u20ac680K\/$814K w\/p). In a close second was Robert Delaunay\u2019s Man\u00e8ge de cochons<\/em>; a work on paper that was estimated at \u20ac500-800K and sold for \u20ac500K\/$599K (\u20ac620K\/$742K w\/p \u2013 this same work sold back in 2017 for $450K \u2013 so the seller walked away with a little extra money). Pierre Bonnard\u2019s small gouache Femme \u00e0 sa toilette<\/em> took the third spot when it sold for \u20ac360K\/$431K (\u20ac450K\/$539K w\/p \u2013 est. \u20ac150-250K — it was last on the market in the 1930s, so we can call that one fresh).<\/p>\n

Rounding out the top five at \u20ac300K\/$359K (\u20ac375\/$449K – actually, the top six) were Degas\u2019s Danseuses en maillot, au repos<\/em> (est. \u20ac300-500K), Dufy\u2019s Nu dans l’atelier de la place Arago \u00e0 Perpignan<\/em> (est. \u20ac120-180K), and F\u00e9lix Vallotton\u2019s Chemin de la Croix-Rouge<\/em> (est. \u20ac250-350K).<\/p>\n

Degas<\/p><\/div>\n

I mentioned earlier that some of the sold works left me wondering why they generated so much interest.\u00a0 Perhaps the most puzzling was a pastel landscape measuring about 6.5 x 12.5 inches by Degas.\u00a0 The work had, what I thought was, a hefty estimate of \u20ac60-80K, and it sold for \u20ac140K\/$168K (\u20ac175K\/$210K w\/p) — can anyone explain why it made so much (I am always interested in learning)?<\/p>\n

The sale also had 38 works that went unsold; these included pieces by Severini (\u20ac300-500K), Bonnard (\u20ac190-270K), Claus (\u20ac180-250K), Miro (\u20ac120-180K), Dufy (\u20ac80-120K), Renoir (\u20ac60-80K), Appel (\u20ac60-80K), Luce (\u20ac45-65k), Vuillard (\u20ac40-60K), and Pascin (\u20ac30-50K).<\/p>\n

Of the 154 lots offered, 116 found buyers (75.3% sell-through rate), and the total achieved was \u20ac8.296M\/$9.9M (\u20ac10.35M\/$12.4M w\/p). The low end of their presale estimate range was \u20ac8.28M, so they just squeaked past it even without the buyer’s premiums.<\/p>\n

Digging deeper, we discover that of the sold works, 18 were below, 56 within, and 42 above their estimate ranges.\u00a0 When we add in the 38 unsold works, their accuracy rate was 36.4% — which is one of the better results.<\/p>\n
