Churchill Koutoubia Mosque<\/p><\/div>\n

On the evening of March 1, Christie\u2019s presented a small sale of Modern British art which included works by Lavery, Moore, Hepworth, and Sir Winston Churchill.<\/p>\n

Henry Moore<\/p><\/div>\n

Taking the top spot was Sir Winston Churchill\u2019s Tower of the Koutoubia Mosque<\/em> that Angelina Jolie was selling. The painting was only 18 x 24 inches, but had excellent provenance (initially, Churchill gave the painting to President Franklin Roosevelt) and carried an estimate of \u00a31.5-2.5M.\u00a0 When the bidding battle ended, the new owner paid \u00a37M\/$9.73M (\u00a38.29M\/$11.5M w\/p) \u2013 an auction record for the artist.\u00a0 Henry Moore\u2019s Maquette for King and Queen<\/em> (a 10 \u00bd inch high bronze) took second place when it sold for \u00a32.5M\/$3.5M (\u00a33.02\/$4.2M w\/p).\u00a0 Third place saw a larger (24 x 36 inches) Churchill work \u2013 Scene at Marrakech<\/em> \u2013 that hammered at \u00a31.55M\/$2.15M (\u00a31.88M\/$2.6M \u2013 est. \u00a3300-500K); Churchill gave this painting to Field Marshal Bernard Law Montgomery (man, I wish my grandfather was a friend of Churchill). Rounding out the top five were Churchill\u2019s St. Paul\u2019s Churchyard<\/em>, which did nothing for me, but I guess the buyer of the other two needed this one as well and ended up paying \u00a3880K\/$1.22M (\u00a31.08M\/$1.5M \u2013 est. \u00a3200-300K); and Barbara Hepworth\u2019s Square Forms<\/em> made \u00a3750K\/$1.04M (\u00a3923K\/$1.3M \u2013 w\/p).<\/p>\n

Churchill – Marrakech<\/p><\/div>\n

There were a few other good results; among them were Sir John Lavery\u2019s The Viscountess Castlerosse, Palm Springs<\/em> that was expected to bring \u00a3400-600K and hammered at \u00a3700K\/$937K (\u00a3863K\/$1.2M \u2013 w\/p)… this painting last sold at auction in 1997 for $63K, so that was a happy seller! Sir Michael Craig-Martin\u2019s With Red Shoes<\/em> was expected to sell between \u00a360-80K and brought \u00a3260K\/$361K (\u00a3325K\/$451K \u2013 w\/p), and Hepworth\u2019s Three Round Forms<\/em> made \u00a3480K\/$$667K (\u00a3599K\/$832K \u2013 w\/p) \u2013 this same bronze last sold in 1988 for $77K \u2026 another happy seller.<\/p>\n

By the end of the sale, of the 34 works offered, 33 sold (an impressive 97% sell-through rate), and the total take was \u00a321M\/$29.3M (\u00a325.6\/$35.6M).\u00a0 The presale estimate range was \u00a39.06-14.28M, so they easily beat that.\u00a0 Of the 33 sold works, 7 were below, 11 within, and 15 above their estimate range, leaving them with an accuracy rate of 32.4% — which is not terrible.<\/p>\n

As we have seen with many other sales, all it takes is one or two bidding battles to make any sale a real success \u2026 at least if you are just looking at the overall numbers.\u00a0 In this case, three paintings by Churchill made all the difference.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
