(unless otherwise noted, all dollar amounts are the hammer price)<\/p>\n<p>Prior to the sale opening on December 11th, two lots were withdrawn, leaving just 54 works to be auctioned off over the course of a boring hour and a half. Withdrawn from the sale were <em>Columbus\u2019 First Landing in America<\/em> by Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze, which held an estimate of $600,000 &#8211; $800,000 (a work that seemed to be an important highlight in the sale as it claimed four catalog pages), and a piece by Thomas Hart Benton, <em>Navajo Sand,<\/em> estimated between $400K &#8211; $600K.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_41132\" style=\"width: 208px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/cassatt.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41132\" class=\" wp-image-41132\" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/cassatt-300x245.jpg\" alt=\"mother and children\" width=\"198\" height=\"162\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/cassatt-300x245.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/cassatt-1024x836.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/cassatt-768x627.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/cassatt-1536x1253.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/cassatt.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 198px) 100vw, 198px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-41132\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cassatt<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The result of the sale fell considerably shy of their $13,610,000 &#8211; $19,180,000 pre-sale estimate, bringing in just $7,232,500 \u2013 that is, until one lot was reopened moments before the sale was to close.\u00a0 The mic cut off, and a young lady approached the auctioneer. Once she stepped out of view, lot 16, <em>Two Girls on the Beach, Tynemouth<\/em> by Winslow Homer (which BI\u2019ed earlier at $1.2M on a $2.5M &#8211; $3.5M estimate) reopened at $1.8M, selling just a moment later for $2M&#8230; the watercolor last sold in 1997 for $1.65M. That brought the final tally up to $9,232,500 ($11.4M with the buyer\u2019s premium), still well short of the low-end estimate.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_41135\" style=\"width: 219px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/hopper.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41135\" class=\" wp-image-41135\" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/hopper-300x208.jpg\" alt=\"blue house on the shore\" width=\"209\" height=\"145\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/hopper-300x208.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/hopper-1024x710.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/hopper-768x532.jpg 768w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/hopper-1536x1064.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/hopper.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 209px) 100vw, 209px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-41135\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hopper<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Overall 15 sold under, 11 fell within, and just 9 above their estimates, with another 19 failing all together\u00a0(a 20.4% accuracy rate).\u00a0 Winslow Homer\u2019s <em>Two Girls on the Beach, Tynemouth,<\/em> snagged the gold medal at $2M after it was reoffered (under the low-end of its estimate). The silver medal was awarded to Mary Cassatt\u2019s \u00a0<em>Children Playing with a Cat,<\/em> which garnered $1.8M (also falling under its $2-3M estimate) \u2013 this same painting sold back in 2006 for $3.38M&#8230; ouch! Taking the bronze medal at $700K, was Edward Hopper\u2019s <em>Gloucester Factory and House<\/em> (this too went below estimate &#8211; $800K-$1.2M).<\/p>\n<p>Among the works that did not sell were Homer<em>\u2019s In the Rapids<\/em> (est. $1-1.5M), Avery\u2019s <em>Mender<\/em> (est. $800K-1.2M), Frieseke\u2019s <em>The Apple Tree<\/em> (est. $400-600K), Avery\u2019s <em>Pink Cock<\/em> (est. $350-550K), Predergast\u2019s <em>Gray Day, Venice<\/em> ($300-500K), and Henry Koerner\u2019s <em>The Rosebush<\/em> (est. $300-500k).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_41133\" style=\"width: 245px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/clymer.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41133\" class=\" wp-image-41133\" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/clymer-300x176.jpg\" alt=\"cowboys and indians\" width=\"235\" height=\"138\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/clymer-300x176.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/clymer.jpg 385w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 235px) 100vw, 235px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-41133\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Clymer<\/p><\/div>\n<p>There was only one work in the sale to blow its estimate out of the water, lot 26, <em>Attack<\/em> by John F. Clymer (a chaotic scene of Native American Indians attacking the caravans of frontiersmen; a popular scene amongst the artist\u2019s Western works).\u00a0 With an estimate of $100k &#8211; $150K, the hammer came down at $710K\u2026 making this the fourth most expensive lot in the sale.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;and that is all she wrote.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The best way I can describe Sotheby\u2019s New York American Art sale is &#8211; better luck next time.
