Eduard Gaertner<\/p><\/div>\n

On December 9th<\/sup>, Sotheby\u2019s offered up a selection of European & British works of art \u2026 the results will speak for themselves. (w\/p = with the buyer\u2019s premium)<\/p>\n

The top lot of the sale was a large oil painting by Eduard Gaertner titled The Royal Opera, Unter den Linden, Berlin,<\/em> which hammered at \u00a3750K\/$992K (\u00a3923K\/$1.22M w\/p \u2013 est. \u00a3800-1.2M).\u00a0 In fact, the sale included 30 other works by the artist, though the rest were works on paper \u2026 all of those that sold made between \u00a32,000 and \u00a310,000, and each carried a \u00a32-3K estimate.<\/p>\n

Sorolla<\/p><\/div>\n

The second most expensive work was Sorolla\u2019s massive (99 x 146 inch) painting Before the Bullfight<\/em> at \u00a3650K\/$860K (\u00a3802K\/$1.06M \u2013 est. \u00a3650-850K) \u2013 guess someone has a giant wall to fill! In a distant third was Akseli Gallen-Kallela\u2019s Skaters on Lake Ruovesi<\/em> at \u00a3320K\/$423K (\u00a3402K\/$532K w\/p \u2013 est. \u00a3300-500K); this one last appeared on the auction block in 2011 and made $158K, so the seller was happy about the result. Rounding out the top five, we had a tie; Anders Zorn\u2019s Girl from Mora Skiing<\/em> (est. \u00a3300-500K) and Franz von Stuck\u2019s Medea<\/em> (est. \u00a3100-150K) each made \u00a3300K\/$397K (\u00a3378K\/$500K w\/p).<\/p>\n

Akseli Gallen-Kallela<\/p><\/div>\n

Some of the better performers included Cornelis Springer\u2019s The Zuiderspui with the Drommedaris, Enkhuizen<\/em> at \u00a3190K\/$251K (est. \u00a3100-150K), Olga W. Florian\u2019s Summer Flowers of the Field<\/em> \u00a3150K\/$198K (est. \u00a350-70K), and Henriette Browne\u2019s Man Sewing<\/em> which crushed its \u00a37-10K estimate when it hammered down at \u00a370K\/$93K.\u00a0 On the other side, there were a lot of works that just did not generate any interest.\u00a0 Among the more expensive were three by Carl Larsson (\u00a3240-340K and two at \u00a3150-200K), Munnings (\u00a3260-360K), Leighton (\u00a3260-360K), and a G\u00e9r\u00f4me (\u00a3200-300K).<\/p>\n

By the end of the sale, of the 176 lots finally offered (6 seemed to have vanished), 97 sold (55.6% sell-through rate), and the total take was \u00a34.18M\/$5.5M (\u00a35.22M\/$6.9M w\/p).\u00a0 The low end of their presale estimate range was \u00a36.46M, so they were way short.\u00a0 Of the 97 sold lots, 16 were below, 55 within, and 26 below their expected ranges.\u00a0 When we consider the 79 unsold works, this gave them an accuracy rate of 31.25% — which is better than most.<\/p>\n

So from the numbers, we can see that their accuracy rate improved, but the overall sale did not perform as hoped.\u00a0 Sadly for the sellers, with all the works coming to the market (too many sales for even us to keep track of) many lots are just not finding buyers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
