{"id":41112,"date":"2020-12-10T19:16:25","date_gmt":"2020-12-11T00:16:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/?p=41112"},"modified":"2024-04-15T01:43:06","modified_gmt":"2024-04-15T05:43:06","slug":"christies-impressionist-modern-day-sale","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/2020\/12\/christies-impressionist-modern-day-sale\/","title":{"rendered":"Christie&#8217;s Impressionist &#038; Modern Day Sale"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\t<div id=\"attachment_41115\" style=\"width: 161px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/renoir-scaled.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41115\" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/renoir-251x300.jpg\" alt=\"young boy painitng at an easle\" width=\"151\" height=\"180\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-41115\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Renoir<\/p><\/div>\n<p>At the end of last week, Christie&#8217;s New York presented an Impressionist and Modern Art Day Sale, and I don&#8217;t think it went as well as they had hoped it would.\u00a0 First of all, it was their 14<sup>th<\/sup> sale of the month and it was only December 4<sup>th<\/sup>; secondly, it was their second Impressionist and Modern-Day Sale in just two months&#8230;you think it&#8217;s just a little too much for potential buyers??<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_41114\" style=\"width: 198px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/picaso.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41114\" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/picaso.jpg\" alt=\"Multi colored man's face\" width=\"188\" height=\"268\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-41114\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Picasso<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The top lot was a painting by Pierre-<a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/bio\/auguste-toulmouche\/\">Auguste<\/a> Renoir title <em>Le petit peintre (Claude Renoir)<\/em>; it was estimated at $600 -900K and it just squeaked by the estimate when it hammered for $960K ($1.182M w\/p).\u00a0 Now I am sure the consignor was happy it made a little more than the estimate, but when I did a little further research, I saw that the last time it sold was at Sotheby&#8217;s in 1988 for $3.2M, so maybe the consignor wasn&#8217;t so happy after all.\u00a0 Next was a work by Pablo Picasso titled <em>Buste d&#8217;homme a la cigarette;<\/em>\u00a0a work on paper that sold for $820K ($1.014M w\/p) on a $1 -1.5M estimate, so it needed the commission to just make the low end of the estimate. And rounding out the top three, was a work by Alfred Kubin titled <em>Der letzte K\u00f6nig<\/em> that was estimated to make $400-600K and just beat the low estimate when it hammered at $420K ($525K w\/p).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_41113\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/kubin.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41113\" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/kubin.jpg\" alt=\"Drawing of a King on a throne\" width=\"200\" height=\"281\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-41113\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kubin<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Unfortunately, there were some major failures which led to the overall poor performance of the sale. First was a painting by Pierre Bonnard titled <em>Raisins noirs et peches ou Panier de fruits<\/em> that was estimated at $400-600K; it last sold in May 2001 for $885,750.\u00a0 Also estimated at $400-600K was a work by Randolf Bauer titled <em>Andante 3 &#8211;<\/em> it failed to find a new home and was last sold in 2013 for $382K.\u00a0 Another miss was a group of 68 miniature replicas and color reproductions in a leather case by Marcel Duchamps; it was also estimated at $400-600K and found no buyer.\u00a0 A work by Marc Chagall titled <em>Couple au Bouquet<\/em> didn&#8217;t make it across the finish line with an estimate of\u00a0 $350 -550K.\u00a0 And lastly, two works by Salvador Dali didn&#8217;t make the cut either &#8211; <em>Narcisse jeune endormi<\/em> was estimated at $300-500K (sold in 2013 for $148.3K) and <em>Projets de rideaux de sc\u00e8ne et \u00e9tudes pr\u00e9liminaires dit aussi &#8220;Grand dessin&#8221;<\/em> which was estimated to bring $350-450K (last sold in 2007 for $360K).<\/p>\n<p>Of the 132 works offered, 51 works were unsold, so just 61.4 % found new homes.\u00a0 Of the works that found buyers&#8230; 18 were above the estimate, 29 were below and 34 were within.\u00a0 The sale was estimated to make $14 &#8211; 19.9M and when all was done it only totaled $9.5M ($10.23M w\/p), so it did not come close to the low estimate.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At the end of last week, Christie&#8217;s New York presented an Impressionist and Modern Art Day Sale, and I don&#8217;t think it went as well as they had hoped it would.\u00a0 First of all, it was their 14th sale of &hellip;
