As such, I thought it would be very apropos to find a recent auction item with a bird theme\u2026I was successful!<\/p>\n<p>John Gould (1804 \u2013 1881) was an English ornithologist and artist; he illustrated and published monographs on birds, and is considered one of the most significant figures in bird illustrations, second only to Audubon. One of his most sought-after publications is titled <em>Birds of Great Britain,<\/em> which Gould self-published and produced just 750 copies of.\u00a0 The set contains 25 volumes, completed between 1863-1873, and contains 367 colored lithographs. \u00a0Although Gould did not do all the illustrations himself, he did supervise their production and took great pride and joy in the images.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-40646\" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/gould.jpg\" alt=\"illustration of British birds\" width=\"174\" height=\"116\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/gould.jpg 450w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/gould-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 174px) 100vw, 174px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A 1<sup>st<\/sup> edition, complete set, compiled into a five-volume set, was recently offered and quickly flew past the estimate of \u00a315 -25K ($19.5 \u2013 32.6K) when it sold for \u00a351K ($66.6K)!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We are happy as larks to be presenting Taking Flight, an exhibition that benefits the American Bird Conservancy.
