{"id":40368,"date":"2020-08-29T06:00:18","date_gmt":"2020-08-29T10:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/?p=40368"},"modified":"2020-08-31T18:07:24","modified_gmt":"2020-08-31T22:07:24","slug":"location-location-location","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/2020\/08\/location-location-location\/","title":{"rendered":"Location, Location, Location"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_40374\" style=\"width: 159px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Thing-1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40374\" class=\" wp-image-40374\" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Thing-1.jpg\" alt=\"yellow, gold vase\" width=\"149\" height=\"149\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Thing-1.jpg 500w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Thing-1-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Thing-1-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 149px) 100vw, 149px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-40374\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Thing 1<\/p><\/div>\n<p>What is the difference between <em>Thing 1<\/em>\u00a0 and <em>Thing 2?<\/em>\u00a0I honestly believe there is only one really big difference, but I will get to that shortly.\u00a0 First, let\u2019s go over what I think are the similarities.\u00a0 Both were produced by the Grueby Faience Company, an American ceramics company founded in 1894, that produced pottery during the American Arts and Crafts period.\u00a0 As described in the auction catalogs, both vases are glazed earthenware created in the early 20<sup>th<\/sup> century (c. 1900), and they both measure 6 \u00be inches in height. <em>Thing 1\u2019s<\/em> description clearly states that the vase has the firm\u2019s name \u201cGrueby Pottery Boston U.S.A\u201d impressed on it, <em>Thing 2\u2019s<\/em> description merely states \u2018with the firm\u2019s impressed mark.\u2019 And although there is a slight variation to an incised marking that identifies the artist<em>, Thing 1<\/em> is marked CH #y39-1, and <em>Thing 2\u2019s<\/em> mark is stated as CH-139. Neither auction had photos of the bottom of the pieces, so I cannot tell where the discrepancy lies, but I would venture to say it is with the cataloging. \u00a0And the last thing I noticed was that both pieces had a similar listing in the Provenance \u201cPrivate Collection, Northern California\u201d \u2013 coincidence? I think not!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_40373\" style=\"width: 157px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Thing-2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40373\" class=\" wp-image-40373\" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Thing-2.jpg\" alt=\"yellow, gold vase\" width=\"147\" height=\"131\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Thing-2.jpg 500w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Thing-2-300x268.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 147px) 100vw, 147px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-40373\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Thing 2<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I can only say from the evidence presented before you that both <em>Thing 1 <\/em>and<em> Thing 2<\/em> are one and the same\u2026.but I could be wrong. I did call one of the auction houses to confirm my suspicion, but of course, they were not at liberty to say anything. So this is what I see as the big difference\u2026<strong>$426,175! <\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When <em>Thing 1<\/em> came up for auction in Los Angeles in April 2019, it sold for $5,075, seems unremarkable and I am sure no one really noticed the sale.\u00a0 Jump forward a little over a year to July 2020, and now the same or a REALLY similar <em>Thing<\/em> comes up for sale in New York, and this little inconspicuous vase becomes the focus of a bidding war.\u00a0 Estimated to make $7-9K this time around (reasonable based on the last sale), it sparked a 45-minute battle, and when the hammer came down it sold for an astonishing $345K ($431.2K w\/p), an auction record for pottery from the Arts and Crafts period. If someone has an explanation for the price difference or can show me that they are indeed two different<em> Things,<\/em> I would love to hear it.\u00a0 Maybe it just proves once again how unreliable, and volatile the auction market is or, does it really show that location makes all the difference\u2026like they always say\u2026LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION!<\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What is the difference between Thing 1\u00a0 and Thing 2?\u00a0I honestly believe there is only one really big difference, but I will get to that shortly.\u00a0 First, let\u2019s go over what I think are the similarities.\u00a0 Both were produced by &hellip;
