Munning\u2019s Springtime, Apple Blossom with a Mare and Foal<\/p><\/div>\n

This week, Sotheby\u2019s, London, also presented an online sale of 19th<\/sup>-century works, though they offered a substantially greater amount of work than the competition\u2026 featuring 211 items, while Christie\u2019s had just 71.\u00a0 Even with almost 3 times as much material, this was not one of the better sales, though it did do better than Christie\u2019s. What I found interesting is that there was a great deal of sculpture offered \u2013 77 lots, or almost 37% of the sale \u2026 I guess they are condensing their sales. (w\/p = with premium)<\/p>\n

\"Munning\u2019s<\/a>

Munning\u2019s Gravel Pit in Suffolk<\/p><\/div>\n

Taking the top slot here was Munnings’s Springtime, Apple Blossom with a Mare and Foal;<\/em>\u00a0a work that carried an \u00a380-120K estimate and sold for \u00a3190K\/$235K (\u00a3238K\/$294K w\/p). There was a tie for number two \u2013 Munnings’s Gravel Pit in Suffolk<\/em> (est. \u00a360-80K) and Jenny Montigny\u2019s Fille au Jardin<\/em> (est. \u00a380-120K) both hammered at \u00a3160K\/$198K (\u00a3200K\/$247K w\/p). In third place was Jacek Malczewski\u2019s The Postwoman<\/em> at \u00a385K\/$105K (\u00a3106K\/$131K w\/p \u2013 est. \u00a330-50K). I am still trying to figure out if it was the fact that the postal worker is a woman, or that she is naked, that caused all the interest \u2026 an inquiring mind wants to know.<\/p>\n

Jenny Montigny\u2019s Fille au Jardin<\/p><\/div>\n

There were a few lots that garnered some strong competition; among them were Jean Montigny\u2019s Autoportrait<\/em> at \u00a320K\/$25K (\u00a325K\/$31K w\/p \u2013 est \u00a31-1.5K), \u00a0Ronner-Knip\u2019s The Young Artist<\/em> at \u00a332K\/$40K (\u00a340K\/$50K w\/p \u2013 est. \u00a38-12K), Erastus Palmer\u2019s Bust of a Woman<\/em> \u2013 \u00a324K\/$30K (\u00a330K\/$37K w\/p \u2013 est. \u00a34-6K), and Munnings’s River Landscape<\/em> \u2013 \u00a365K\/$80K (\u00a381K\/$100K w\/p \u2013 est. \u00a310-15K). On the flip side, some of the works, both paintings and sculpture, with the highest estimates failed to find buyers.\u00a0 These included works by Grimshaw (est. \u00a3200-300K), Gaertner (est. \u00a3200-300K), after Canova (est. \u00a3100-150K), Bottinelli (est. \u00a3100-150K), and after Fraikin (est. \u00a380-120K).<\/p>\n

Jacek Malczewski\u2019s The Postwoman<\/p><\/div>\n

By the time this one was over, of the 210 works offered, 97 sold (46.2%), and the total take was \u00a32.23M\/$2.75M (\u00a32.8M\/$3.46M w\/p) \u2026 the low end of their presale estimate range was about \u00a33.77M\/$4.69M, so they fell a bit short.\u00a0 Of the sold works, 12 were below, 65 within, and 21 above their presale estimates, leaving them an accuracy rate of 30.9% \u2026 far better than the competition.<\/p>\n

If you are going to overwhelm the market with online sales (which is what is happening with the big salerooms right now), you need to be sure they are compact and filled with fresh material, in excellent condition, and accurately estimated.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
