Gustav Bauernfeind\u2019s Procession in Jaffa<\/p><\/div>\n

Sotheby\u2019s, London, offered up a selection of 19th<\/sup> century Orientalist works from the Najd Collection (the sale was originally going to take place on March 31).\u00a0 The catalog featured 34 works; however, by the time the auction took place (strictly online), several important works appeared to have been withdrawn. Ludwig Deutsch\u2019s The Scholar<\/p><\/div>\n

Taking the number one spot was Gustav Bauernfeind\u2019s Procession in Jaffa,<\/em> hammering at \u00a31.4M\/$1.76M (\u00a31.695M\/$2.14M w\/p, est. \u00a31.5-2.5M). Coming in a distant second was Ludwig Deutsch\u2019s The Scholar<\/em> \u2013 it hammered for \u00a3500K\/$630K (\u00a3615K\/$776K w\/p \u2013 est. \u00a3500-700K), and taking an even more distant third was Rudolf Ernst\u2019s Outside the Mosque<\/em> which made \u00a3110K\/$139K (\u00a3137.5K\/$173K w\/p \u2013 est. \u00a3150-200K).\u00a0 Rounding out the top five were G\u00e9r\u00f4me\u2019s The Camel Driver<\/em> \u2013 \u00a380K\/$101K (\u00a3100K\/$126K w\/p \u2013 est. \u00a3150-250K), and Ernst\u2019s The Palace Guard<\/em> \u2013 \u00a365K\/$82K (\u00a381.25K\/$102K w\/p \u2013 est. \u00a380-120K).\u00a0 From just these results, you can see that it was not a very strong sale.<\/p>\n

Rudolf Ernst\u2019s Outside the Mosque<\/p><\/div>\n

The sale might have seen a bit more strength, had some of the more valuable pieces not been removed; these included three works by Deutsch (two estimated at \u00a3600-800K, one at \u00a3400-600K) and a G\u00e9r\u00f4me (\u00a3200-300K). \u00a0Also, a few of the more expensive lots did not sell \u2013 Deutsch\u2019s The Sentinel<\/em> (\u00a3200-300K), The Water Seller<\/em> (\u00a3200-300K), and A Refreshing Drink<\/em> (\u00a3200-300K), and G\u00e9r\u00f4me\u2019s Egyptian Recruits Crossing the Desert<\/em> (\u00a3700-1M). Sadly, I cannot even point to any lots that had serious competition.<\/p>\n

When the session was over, of the 29 works offered, 24 sold (82.75%), and the total take was \u00a32.6M\/$3.3M (\u00a33.22M\/$4.06M w\/p) \u2013 the low end of their estimate range was \u00a34.3M, so they fell way short. Of the sold works, 19 were below, 5 were within, and none were above their estimate ranges; this left them with an accuracy rate of 17%.<\/p>\n

While thinking about these results, it is very important to keep the following in mind.\u00a0 On June 11 (the day this sale took place), the pandemic was making the news (cases on the rise in several states), the Dow was having a terrible day (down over 1500 points \u2013 5.5%), and oil was hovering in the $36 range (down over 3%).\u00a0 To see how much this has affected the Orientalist market, all we need to do is look at the last sale featuring works from the Najd collection.\u00a0 Back in October 2019, another work by Bauernfeind was offered (Market in Jaffa<\/em>) \u2013 it was smaller in size, but similar in composition to the one sold today.\u00a0 That work carried a much higher estimate \u00a32.5-3.5M and sold for \u00a33.73M\/$4.8M; more than all 24 lots in today\u2019s sale.<\/p>\n

We have always said that the most significant issues one faces when selling at auction is that they happen on a specific day and at specific time.\u00a0 If the world is in turmoil at that moment (stocks dropping, etc.), it will impact the results.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
