{"id":39283,"date":"2020-03-17T14:11:00","date_gmt":"2020-03-17T18:11:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/?p=39283"},"modified":"2020-03-30T19:42:34","modified_gmt":"2020-03-30T23:42:34","slug":"knowing-righter-from-wrong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/2020\/03\/knowing-righter-from-wrong\/","title":{"rendered":"Knowing Righter from Wrong&#8230;."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Philip Bennet Righter, of Los Angeles, is facing up to 25 years in federal prison after <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.courthousenews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/RighterArtFraud-PLEA.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pleading guilty<\/a><\/em> to federal charges of art fraud.\u00a0 The US Attorney\u2019s Office of Central District of California has been investigating Righter since 2016. It claims he defrauded clients of over $758,000 by selling fake works by blue-chip artists (Basquiat, Haring, Warhol, etc.).\u00a0 He faces similar charges in the State of Florida after being arrested, in 2019, for theft and allegedly attempting to defraud a Miami gallery of $1 million.<\/p>\n<p>According to reports, Righter supposedly purchased fake works of art on eBay, falsified certificates of authenticity, and resold the paintings as authentic works.\u00a0 He went a step further by purchasing <em>\u201ccustom stamps featuring the insignias of artists\u2019 estates, and cited Basquiat\u2019s former dealer, Annina Nosei Gallery, in provenance documents.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Not only did Righter sell fake works to unsuspecting people, but he used a fake Basquiat as collateral for a loan (which he defaulted on), made art donations to charities, and even claimed to have had $2.5 million worth of art stolen from his home.<\/p>\n<p>It will be interesting to see how much time he actually gets.<\/p>\n<p>Source: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.courthousenews.com\/california-man-pleads-guilty-to-modern-art-fraud-scheme\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">California Man Pleads Guilty to Modern Art Fraud Scheme<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Source: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/art-world\/philip-righter-art-fraud-fake-paintings-1799904\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A Los Angeles Man Who Forged Documents to \u2018Authenticate\u2019 Fake Works by Warhol and Basquiat Has Pleaded Guilty to Federal Fraud Charges<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Philip Bennet Righter, of Los Angeles, is facing up to 25 years in federal prison after pleading guilty to federal charges of art fraud.\u00a0 The US Attorney\u2019s Office of Central District of California has been investigating Righter since 2016.
