On the morning of December 12, Christie’s presented their selection of Victorian, Pre-Raphaelite & British Impressionist<\/a> paintings… many of the fresher works did pretty well.<\/p>\n

Sir Alfred Munnings’s The White Canoe<\/p><\/div>\n

Coming in first was Sir William Russell Flint’s The Judgment of Paris<\/em> which sported a \u00a3150-250K estimate and sold for \u00a3407K with premium (w\/p).\u00a0 The painting was purchased by the seller (J.E. Safra) in 1993 for \u00a365K.\u00a0 Sir Alfred Munnings’s The White Canoe<\/em> achieved a price of \u00a3371K w\/p on a \u00a3300-500K estimate … this painting was last on the market in 1999.\u00a0 And Grimshaw’s Whitby at Night<\/em> brought \u00a3299K w\/p (est. \u00a3250-350K).\u00a0 Rounding out the top five were a beautiful portrait by Philip Alexius de Laszlo which carried a \u00a320-30K estimate and sold for \u00a3275K w\/p (this painting had been in the same family since it was painted in 1910), and Godward’s Winding Wool in a Pompeian Garden<\/em> that made \u00a3250K w\/p (est. \u00a3200-300K).<\/p>\n

Among the other strong prices were Burne-Jones’s St. Dorothy<\/em> – \u00a3125K (est. \u00a340-60K), Cowper’s Rapunzel Sings from the Tower<\/em> – \u00a3178K (est. \u00a360-80K); de Morgan’s The Wandering Jew<\/em> – \u00a3125K (est. \u00a340-60K), Millais’ Portrait of Dorothy Lawson<\/em> – \u00a3150K (est. \u00a370-100K), E.B. Leighton’s Straying Thoughts<\/em> – \u00a3<\/em>27.5K (est. \u00a37-10K), and G.G. Kilburne’s A Seated Girl, Holding a Tennis Racquet<\/em> – \u00a39.4K (est. \u00a3<\/em>800-1,200).<\/p>\n

There were just two big ones that failed to find buyers,\u00a0 Burne-Jones’s drawing Spes and Daphne<\/em> (\u00a3200-300K), and Munnings’s Through the Gap<\/em> (\u00a3250-350K).\u00a0 Not too bad.<\/p>\n

By the end of the session, of the 95 lots offered, 73 sold (76.8%), and the total hit \u00a34.12M ($5.56M) which was above the low end of their estimate range – \u00a33.16M\/$4.26M. of the 73 sold works, 27 were below, 25 within, and 21 above their estimate which left them with an accuracy rate of 26.3% — better than many similar sales.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
