Rounding out the top five at \u00a368,750 were John Brett&#8217;s <em>Portrait of Arthur Brett<\/em> (est. \u00a310-15K) and David Roberts&#8217; <em>Castle and Bridge of St. Angelo, Rome<\/em> (est. \u00a330-50K).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_38697\" style=\"width: 216px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38697\" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/lavery-300x252.jpg\" alt=\"Sir John Lavery's A Southern Sea\" width=\"206\" height=\"173\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-38697\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sir John Lavery&#8217;s A Southern Sea<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Other works that performed well were John Brett&#8217;s <em>Cape Wrath<\/em> &#8211; a 7 x 14 inch work which carried an \u00a38-12K estimate and sold for \u00a322,500; William P. Frith&#8217;s <em>Kate Nickleby at Madame Mantalin&#8217;s<\/em> brought \u00a347,500 (est. \u00a315-20K) and a small study by Frederick Robinson made \u00a316,250 (est. \u00a34-6K).<\/p>\n<p>There were a number of large failures, these included Burne-Jones&#8217; <em>Aurora<\/em> (est. \u00a3600-800K) &#8211; they devoted 6 pages in the catalog to this work and when looking at the detail images one can understand why they felt they needed so much real estate and why it did not sell at the estimated price; Grimshaw&#8217;s <em>October Afterglow<\/em> (est. \u00a3150-200K); John Emms&#8217; <em>The New Forest Buckhounds<\/em> (\u00a380-120K); and Lavery&#8217;s <em>Mrs. Geoffrey Birkbeck<\/em> (est. \u00a340-60K).<\/p>\n<p>By the end of the short session, of the 49 works offered, 30 sold (61%), and the total take was \u00a31.75M &#8230; the low end of their presale estimate range was \u00a32.4M &#8212; so they fell far short.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On the 10th, Sotheby&#8217;s offered up a small group of Victorian, Pre-Raphaelite &amp; British Impressionist works of art.\u00a0 While there were some strong results, overall the sale did not cut the mustard.
