{"id":38271,"date":"2019-10-01T15:52:51","date_gmt":"2019-10-01T19:52:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/?p=38271"},"modified":"2024-03-05T01:59:54","modified_gmt":"2024-03-05T06:59:54","slug":"bonhams-19th-century-bey-makes-the-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/2019\/10\/bonhams-19th-century-bey-makes-the-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Bonhams\u2019 19th Century \u2013 Bey Makes the Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_38278\" style=\"width: 233px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/bey.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38278\" class=\"wp-image-38278 \" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/bey.jpg\" alt=\"Osman Hamdi Bey\u2019s Young Girl Reading\" width=\"223\" height=\"223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/bey.jpg 225w, https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/bey-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 223px) 100vw, 223px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-38278\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Osman Hamdi Bey\u2019s &#8220;Young Girl Reading&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>On September 26<sup>th<\/sup>, Bonhams offered their selection of 19<sup>th<\/sup> Century European, Victorian &amp; British Impressionist Art.\u00a0 As you might surmise from the sale&#8217;s title, there was a wide variety of works \u2026 both in subject matter and quality (w\/p = with premium).\u00a0 The sale got off to a rocky start with only one of the first six lots selling.\u00a0 Then a rather lackluster Corot appeared (I figured this one would not sell) and it actually found a buyer at \u00a345K (\u00a356K\/$69K w\/p \u2013 est. \u00a325-30K).\u00a0 This was followed by Gustave Courbet\u2019s <em>La Plage de Saint-Aubin<\/em> which carried an estimate of \u00a3120-180K and sold for a fairly strong \u00a3290K (\u00a3363K\/$446K w\/p).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_38280\" style=\"width: 195px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/ludwig_deutsch_the_qanun_player.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38280\" class=\"size-full wp-image-38280\" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/ludwig_deutsch_the_qanun_player.jpg\" alt=\"Ludwig Deutsch's &quot;The Qanun Player&quot;\" width=\"185\" height=\"272\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-38280\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ludwig Deutsch&#8217;s &#8220;The Qanun Player&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The sale continued to be quite choppy, with some works selling and others finding no takers.\u00a0 By the time they got to lot 60, about half of the offerings went unsold. Then they got to the star of the sale \u2013 Osman Hamdi Bey\u2019s <em>Young Girl Reading<\/em> \u2013 a 16 x 20-inch canvas; according to the catalog, the painting was last on the market in 1976 and carried a \u00a3600-800K estimate.\u00a0 The action was fast and furious, and by the end of the bidding, the new owner paid a record \u00a35.7M (\u00a36.32M\/$7.8M w\/p) \u2013 that was the top lot of the sale. The Bey was followed by three Ludwig Deutsch paintings \u2013 <em>The Qanun Player<\/em> which brought \u00a3960K (\u00a31.17M\/$1.44M \u2013 w\/p \u2013 est. \u00a3300-500K), making it the number two lot of the sale; <em>The Connoissuer <\/em>at \u00a3270K (\u00a3338K\/$414K \u2013 w\/p \u2013 est. \u00a3150-250K); and <em>The Goza Smoker<\/em> \u00a3940K (\u00a31.14M\/$1.4M \u2013 w\/p \u2013 est. \u00a3120-180K) \u2013 making it the number three lot of the sale.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_38279\" style=\"width: 197px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/ludwig_deutsch_the_goza_smoker.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-38279\" class=\"size-full wp-image-38279\" src=\"https:\/\/rehs.com\/eng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/ludwig_deutsch_the_goza_smoker.jpg\" alt=\"Ludwig Deutsch's &quot;The Goza Smoker&quot;\" width=\"187\" height=\"270\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-38279\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ludwig Deutsch&#8217;s &#8220;The Goza Smoker&#8221;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>There were a few other strong results which included works by Alphonse Dinet \u00a3130K (\u00a3163K\/$200K \u2013 w\/p \u2013 est. \u00a3130-150K); Charles W. Wyllie\u2019s <em>The Backwater <\/em>at \u00a350K (\u00a363K\/$77K \u2013 w\/p \u2013 est. \u00a320-30K); and a small (20 x 14 inch) Henry Scott Tuke at \u00a380K (\u00a3100K\/$123K \u2013 w\/p \u2013 est. \u00a360-80K).<\/p>\n<p>By the end of the auction, of the 103 lots offered, 68 sold (a sell-through rate of 66%) which totaled \u00a39.5M\/$11.7M.
