Tissot – Room Overlooking the Harbour<\/p><\/div>\n

In the afternoon of July 11, Sotheby\u2019s presented their group of Victorian, Pre-Raphaelite & British Impressionist Art, and it was a bumpy ride (w\/p \u2013 with premium).<\/p>\n

J.W. Godward – Pyrallis<\/p><\/div>\n

Taking the top spot was a tiny J.J.J. Tissot (10 x 13 inches) titled Room Overlooking the Harbour<\/em>.\u00a0 Estimated to bring \u00a3400-600K, the painting hammered at the low end \u2013 \u00a3400K\/$502K (\u00a3495K\/$621K w\/p).\u00a0 What I do find very interesting, is that the results for this work are no longer listed in the art database we use.\u00a0 Wonder how the buyer managed that?\u00a0 Coming in a strong second was Pyrallis<\/em>, a beautiful painting by J.W. Godward, that carried a \u00a3100-150K estimate and hammered at \u00a3215K\/$270K (\u00a3269K\/$337K w\/p); and in third we had another very strong showing \u2013 Alma-Tadema\u2019s tiny (7.75 x 5.75 inches) Expectation<\/em> was expected to bring \u00a315-20K and when the battle was over, it hammered at \u00a3140K\/$176K (\u00a3175K\/$220K).<\/p>\n

There were a couple of additional works that brought in strong prices. \u00a0A study of feet by Burne-Jones crushed its \u00a32-3K estimate when it sold for \u00a325K\/$31K. Simeon Solomon\u2019s Potens<\/em> fetched \u00a319K\/$23.5K (est. \u00a36-8K), and Fortescue-Brickdale\u2019s The Cap that Fits<\/em> made \u00a325K\/$31K (est. \u00a36-8K).\u00a0 Among the works that failed to attract interest were J.W. Godward\u2019s An Edition de Luxe<\/em> (est. \u00a3450-650K) \u2013 this was also the lot which carried the highest estimate in the sale. Additionally Seago\u2019s Salthouse<\/em> (est. \u00a350-70K), Tissot\u2019s Kathleen Newton in a Thames-Side Tavern<\/em> (est. \u00a330-50K), and Leighton\u2019s The Mountains of Asia Minor, from Rhodes<\/em> (est. \u00a330-50K) failed to find buyers.<\/p>\n

By the end of this small sale, of the 82 works offered, 62 sold (63.4% sell-through rate), and the total take was \u00a31.96M\/$2.46M (w\/p).\u00a0 The low end of their estimate range was \u00a32.11M, so even with the buyer\u2019s premium added in, they fell short.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
