Akseli Gallen-Kallela’s View over a Lake at Sunset<\/p><\/div>\n

On July 9th<\/sup>, Sotheby\u2019s presented their summer selection of 19th<\/sup>-century European paintings.\u00a0 Even though the sale did ok, I still think that presenting this period of art during the summer month\u2019s is not the best idea.\u00a0 We all know that the auction rooms need to feed the machine, but I have to believe that there would have been even more competition for this material in the Fall or Spring. (Unless otherwise noted, all prices include the buyer\u2019s premium)<\/p>\n

Gustave Courbet’s Paysage de neige avec arbres et rochers<\/p><\/div>\n

Taking the top spot was View over a Lake at Sunset<\/em> by the Finnish artist Akseli Gallen-Kallela which carried a \u00a3100-150K estimate and sold for an auction record of \u00a3711K ($886K) \u2013 the previous record was $550K, set back in 2017.\u00a0 Coming in second was Paysage de neige avec arbres et rochers<\/em> by Gustave Courbet.\u00a0 This painting had been in the same collection for more than 120 years and brought \u00a3591K ($737K) on a \u00a3200-300K estimate. \u00a0The third spot was nabbed by Josef Chelmonski\u2019s Midnight Ride<\/em> that was estimated at \u00a3200-300K and sold for \u00a3338K ($421K) \u2013 another work that has not been seen in a long time.\u00a0 Rounding out the top five were Sorrolla\u2019s Puerto de Guetaria, Pais Vasco<\/em> at \u00a3325K ($405K \u2013 estimate \u00a3250-350K), and Willem B. Tholen\u2019s The Billiards Player<\/em> at \u00a3288K ($358K \u2013 estimate \u00a360-80K).\u00a0 I have always said that freshness is the key to success, and according to the catalog, all of the top lots had been off the market for at least 30 years.<\/p>\n

Josef Chelmonski\u2019s Midnight Ride<\/p><\/div>\n

There were other strong results \u2013 Chierici\u2019s Surprised!<\/em> made \u00a3213K ($265K \u2013 est. \u00a3150-200K), Masdag\u2019s Boats at Sea<\/em> brought \u00a394K ($117K \u2013 est. \u00a345-60K), Sorolla\u2019s El Palleter<\/em> also achieved 94K ($117K \u2013 est. \u00a340-60K), and Boldini\u2019s The Artist\u2019s Model<\/em> fetched \u00a3131K ($153K \u2013 est. \u00a360-80K). \u00a0On the flip side, there were some big works that failed to find buyers, among them, were Segantini\u2019s Idyll<\/em> (\u00a3100-150K) and the Shepherd in Love<\/em> (\u00a380-120K), Nonell\u2019s Consuelo<\/em> (\u00a3200-300K), Sorolla\u2019s La Caleta, Malaga<\/em> (est. \u00a3350-450K),\u00a0and Majorelle\u2019s Sous les palmiers dattiers<\/em> (est. \u00a3250-350K).<\/p>\n

By the end of the sale, of the 68 works offered, 42 found buyers (61.7%) and their total take was \u00a34.06M ($5.05M) \u2013 low end of their presale estimate was \u00a33.59M; so they made it with the buyer\u2019s premium added in.\u00a0 Of the 42 sold works, 5 were below, 25 within, and 12 above their estimate range.\u00a0 When we factor in the unsold lots, this left them with an accuracy rate of 36.8% — better than normal.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
