On the evening of June 18th<\/sup>, Sotheby\u2019s presented their Modern & Post-War British Art sale in London.\u00a0 This was a rather small sale and overall, they did ok.<\/p>\n

Henry Moore<\/p><\/div>\n

Taking the top spot was L.S. Lowry\u2019s A Cricket Match<\/em> which brought \u00a31.16M ($1.45M) on an \u00a3800-1.2M estimate. The work was last on the market in 1996 when it sold for \u00a3282K ($435K) \u2026 so there was a nice profit for the seller.\u00a0 In second, they had a small work on paper by Henry Moore titled\u00a0Shelter Drawing: Seated Mother and Child,<\/em> that commanded \u00a3855K ($1.07M) on a \u00a3600-800K estimate.\u00a0 This same work sold in 2011 for \u00a3635K ($1M \u2013 guess the Pound was a lot stronger then and hopefully the seller was British, so he actually turned a small profit).\u00a0 Taking the number three slot was a small Ben Nicholson titled Still Life (Speckled) March 18 \u2013 49<\/em> that made a fairly strong \u00a3639K ($803K) on a \u00a3400-600K estimate.\u00a0 Rounding out the top five were Euan Uglow\u2019s Beautiful Girl Lying Down<\/em> at \u00a3338K ($424K \u2013 est. \u00a3300-500K) \u2013 now here is an artist we all should have bought, since back in 1993 this same painting was offered at a Christie\u2019s South Kensington sale (their low-end auction room) with a \u00a31-1.5K estimate and sold for a pretty strong \u00a322K ($33K) \u2026 even so, not a bad return. And then there was Barry Flanagan\u2019s Acrobats<\/em> (a bronze featuring two anorexic rabbits) which made \u00a3294K ($369K \u2013 est. \u00a3150-250K).<\/p>\n

There were a few works that failed to garner any interest; among them Edward Burra (\u00a3200-300K), Reg Butler (\u00a3120-180K), Euan Uglow (\u00a3120-180K), Walter Sickert (\u00a380-120K), and a couple by Patrick Heron (\u00a3400-600K and \u00a3100-150K).<\/p>\n

At the end of the short session, of the 29 works offered, 21 sold (72.5% sell-through rate) and the total take (with premium) was \u00a35.7M ($7.17M) \u2026 the low end of their estimate range was \u00a34.97M\/$6.25M (without premium).<\/p>\n

On June 19th<\/sup>, they followed up with the Day Sale which added a few more Pounds into the kitty.\u00a0 Here, only three works top the \u00a3100K mark \u2013 Ben Nicholson\u2019s Dec. 59 (Sunion)<\/em> at \u00a3163K ($204K \u2013 est. \u00a3100-150K), Ben Nicholson\u2019s 1956 (Cloverleaf)<\/em> at \u00a3112.5K ($141K \u2013 est. \u00a330-50K), and Sir Peter Blake\u2019s Goldfish<\/em> at \u00a3106K (\u00a3134K \u2013 est. \u00a330-50K).<\/p>\n

Of the 111 works offered in this session, 79 sold (71% sell-through rate), adding another \u00a32.55M ($3.2M).\u00a0 When combined, the two sessions brought in \u00a38.25M ($10.37M) from 100 sold lots giving them a 71.4% sell-through rate.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
